colorado elk hunt

I am looking for areas to apply to hunt elk and try and organize an affordable elk hunt for myself and hunting partner. I've hunted unguided from the circle K ranch in dolores ,co the last couple of years and opportunity seemed to dry up where we were. We would like to try someplace different. living in Massachusetts makes it a bit more difficult as time is limited. The folks at the DOW mentioned Gunnison Nat Forest and south of GMU 76. I'm game for most anyplace that provides an opportunity.  Rugged terrain not a deterant. Any advice for 2 novice trad bowhunters trying to harvest their first elk would be greatly appreciated.

Check harvest reports from DOW. North west Colorado has best harvest reports.

Do you have any preference points or are you looking for an over the counter unit?

I have 1 but my hunting partner does not. So that would mean 0 points for a "group" application. I am looking for opportunity. Must be fair chase. I'm really not a trophy hunter. A nice shot at a fat cow would be just as exciting as shooting a bull. I have been thinking about Northwest CO as Britt had mentioned.

I think you can have opportunities to shoot an elk in any OTC unit.  The key to OTC units (IMO)is knowing the unit.  That is tough to do from the other side of the country.  I think you should pick an area you are interested in and do as much internet research as possible and come out and enjoy your hunt.  You will then have that much more knowledge for the next hunt.
