Anyone outside practicing yet???
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:03:00 PM »
Is anyone outside practicing yet?  It has been a bit too wet for me, but the last couple days of nice weather have given me the itch to get out and about.

I hope to take this out and practice with it enough to hunt with it in the fall (50x# Super Grizzly).  I have another Super Grizzly in 45x# (only 212 numbers from this one) that I am going rig up with a Bear reel, and try bowfishing for carp this year.

A bunch of us shoot every Wednesday night at Broken Arrow in Milwaukie. We do the virtual hunt known as the DART Target System.

It is a blast. 3D season is kicking off as well.

Ron, the first stretch of decent weather I'm heading to the hills for some stumpshooting and cougar calling! I figure with the fawn drop those cats will be alert to a Spring vension meal...but maybe one will get a BIG surprise...haha

That sounds like a good idea.  I have a "fawn in distress" call that might be interesting to use.  I still don't know if I like the idea of a cougar sneaking up on me though.....

I know a place where there was tons of cougar scat last year, full of elk bone fragments :-(.

I want to do the virtual hunt like BlacktailBwhtr is talking about. Looks like fun.

Ron, lets go get one. Okie can be backup incase we need it. Kind of like Fred Bear hunting polar bears up north.  haha  We can do the triangular setup.

Does that mean we need to take a .458 Winchester Magnum for Okie to carry?

Well Ron that may be a little overkill...haha I was thinking more like a .270.

I'm in. Unreliable as a backup but "in" nonetheless.

Finally got outside this weekend and shot a couple dozen arrows.  Not as accurately as I wanted to, but it was practice just the same!

Was able to find a deserted stretch of sand dune on the coast, to check out how my broadheads fly compared to field tips.  About a foot left of the field tip impact at 20 yards.  (both 125 grain heads, Zwickey Eskimos and 3 Rivers field tips).  It was windy though, so I may need to try this experiment again!

A foot left?  I bet it was downwind side of the field points?

I shot today on my freshly cut lawn.  Ahhhh, dry weather!!

Ron, are you getting ready for those coast elk?

Hey, I've been dodging storms a lot. Something I learned here, is that shooting with soaking wet fletching is a good test for your equipments tuning  :banghead:  I guess persistance is what it takes.

It seems like my fingers are a lot more tender at the beginning of the season, but after a while the callouses build up and it doesn't seem to bother me.

Snag, my bow may be ready for the coast, but my body isn't ready to be chasing elk around those hills-sometime I think coast elk is a younger man's game   :) .

Ain't that the truth. I turned the big 60 this year, so even the Blacktails get harder to get out of the woods, especially since hiking in a few miles has become a habit.

Not that I am a great hunter or anything, so I don't have to make the decision often.  I now find myself thinking "How am I going to get this thing out of here????" when a shot presents itself, instead of just taking it.
