Title: Longhammock campfire thread
Post by: gnome on July 02, 2019, 08:02:04 AM
 :campfire:
Didn't know where to put this kind of stuff, so here's that place.
The Spring Run gate marker, has gone from an old deer target, to a leg quarter, to you had better turn around.

so I have started on making a new marker.

it is just stuck on a 3D target stake for now. not good.
but that is what it looks like so far.

I was way over thinking this.
just stuck it in a pipe used for paper targets, and done!

should be able to see it from down the road.

Thanks , but just getting it off the van is not a problem. I'll be ok.
It rolled the rear rain gutter over the doors, and they will not open.  Thats a problem!
But I still have a yard full of things to drive.  :biglaugh:

This might be the last shoot before fall rendezvous  :dunno:

Is anyone interested in chronographing  their bow/arrow comb before the rendezvou ?

I am working on a deflector shield, not that I, personally, have a tendency to shoot low, but i've heard about that kind of thing happening.    :bigsmyl:

Thanks for another great year.:clapper:

Down on the spring run, go'na have some big fun,
just  shootn'  some arrows 'n bows.
no scores to keep, just boars and sheep, and other kinds of foam.
so come bend a bow, lose an arrow, and feel right at home.
There's always go'na be a good lunch;
couldn't ask for a better bunch.
just  shootn'  some  arrows 'n bows.
Fresh fish in the fryer, piggys on the grill.
Sorry ; no burgers on a bun,  and chicken takes a back seat ,
'cause nothin' can beat what you hunt to eat.
Please no road kill.
Go'na have some big fun, down on the spring run,
shootn' some arrows and bows.

 -gnome

Good luck, and hope to see everyone next season.

I've been busy redoing the shooting range.  I put in a 60 yard shot with a mckenzie gobblin, and a new aimright bear.

I had an order for some Rinehart targets that was due to ship tomorrow, but they were told to stay home yesterday.   All of Wisconsin is on a stay at home order.    :dunno:

That sounds like your range is expanding, I have one deer target but have not shot it in years. I will have to work even if everything else shuts down.. I also work during Hurricanes.

I,ve moved the VIP lounge, and have 10 3d targets set out, plus the one's at the backstop, plus a vegas 3 spot face, and a three hundred five spot face....   I'm about 70% of the way to where I want it.

 Impressive, That sounds like a heck of a range.
Title: Re: Longhammock campfire thread
Post by: gnome on March 28, 2020, 07:16:04 PM
It's coming along....  I've got the shooting lanes set so you can't see any of the upcoming targets until your at that stake; It's not just a lot of targets in a line....There is also no direct arrow retrieval on the 3d path, until you have shot the course with 12 arrows..... There it a trail connecting all the stations from the back side so it avoids the crushed down look, and your taking a real life shot... the loop will bring your back to the 20 yard line for the target faces, and around you go again.... bring your A game, they are all tough shots....   :coffee:

The back trail sounds like a good idea for a private range. I don't care for open targets, I like short trashy shots.

Nice job on the Range! When the rest of the targets arrive you will have to have at least 12 arrows to finish the range. Which reminds me that I need to get 3 dozen arrow wraps..

3Rivers has a good sale on Beman ICS Lost Camo Hunter Pro Shafts at 49.99 for 12.
https://www.3riversarchery.com/beman-ics-hunter-pro-carbon-shafts.html

I normally shoot Gold Tip's, and was about to buy some more, but 3Rivers has done a great job of tagging American made products on their website.... thanks for that. Going to try the Bemans.

2doz Beman centershot 500 shafts, with 175gr point, and Truflight feathers, all made in USA. On the way....

Not shooting or working on anything.. Mostly staying away from any crowds..I stocked up on canned, frozen and dry goods back in March so I might have to go to the Grocery store once every 2 weeks if I need fresh milk , eggs or veggies..  about 30 years ago I had some Beman Carbon Arrows with outserts... and at that time they were made in France..I think Easton? bought them out.
Title: Re: Longhammock campfire thread
Post by: gnome on April 30, 2020, 07:31:36 PM
This has to be the slowest internet board ever… nobody else wants to post anything… I haven’t figured it out yet.

I remember the old outserts; the arrows where super skinny.  Gold Tip's used to be made in USA, but moved to mexico with Victory and all the others. I was pleased to find out Beman was owned by Easton, and where made here. I have always been in the "Buy American" camp, any time I have a reasonable choice.

When socializing and travel begin to return, I hope you, and everyone else get time to come shoot the new setup.  I’ve been working on this for decades, and it’s finally coming together.  I won’t be able to host open invitation shoots like Longhammock; layout dictates only a single group of shooters, 5 or 6 max at a time…..more or of a, "come shoot when you can"… weekdays, or weekends, are not relevant to me anymore.

There are 10 new targets in all.... they all came in one huge box, stretch wrapped to a pallet....  Big-un rolled up with it in the back of his truck.... Brian climbed up and cut the wrap off, and just started handing down pieces.....and pieces....and pieces....we had no idea how many were in there until we counted heads.... Built movable stands for 6 so far..... still need to build 4 more for a coyote, a bear, and two more deer.

Title: Re: Longhammock campfire thread
Post by: gnome on June 29, 2020, 04:07:53 PM
We had a good shoot on Sunday.   Attendance was pretty sparse, there were only 11 of us.... and there was so much food...

I just sat and talk with Morgan, while Brian did all the cooking.   It's hard to get ahead of Brian on doing prep work.... by the

time I figure out what needs to be done .... he's finished.... and I always enjoy time spent talking with Morgan.... He is the

quintessential southern gentleman.

I went back to the range (long hammock) this morning to finish building the last 4 target stands..... got these done, and

thought, well the first 3 stations are pretty close, I'll set new targets on them and call it a day..... I put 3 deer each on stations

#1 & #2 ... and replaced the bear on station #3.... They look really good!....

Walked the rest of the course to survey placements for the other new targets,  and ended up doing  whole course reset...

flipped everything to their good sides, and added a new station with a 20yd buck, and a 25yd muley.... turn the standing bear

more to Scott's liking (and to make it last longer)... rehabilitated the the fallen javelin... set the new 1/3 caribou out by the

old caribou...

.... then set the coyote as a bonus 35yd shot from station #3, across to station #4 (big bear and bedded doe long shot)....

....by then I was tired, bleeding in three places, and my buzz had worn off.... called it a day....

Post by: gnome on July 11, 2020, 04:21:24 PM
A big thanks to Rob for letting me and Tom hog hunt Friday evening.  We were able to get in after the noon showers, and man is it wet back there.   We setup along an east/west fence line, with fence and swamp to our back, and feed plot to the north.  About an hour or so in I could hear a slow rustle and low soft grunts behind us, then a retreat.  The fence line was to thick to see through, and never got to eyeball one, but   I’d bet they were looking for a way in other than the road, that was knee deep, suck the boots off your feet, muck, after all the rain this week.

This was the first time I have tried to get back in the woods to hunt in many years….  I have been walking a lot better this year… I’ve been able to complete a longhammock shoot without a cane…. Yea….  But this trip has shown me that I’m gonna need to seriously realign my, “I think I can”, with my ,“I really can”….

20 minutes before dead dark, we pulled-up seats, and I wanted to walk down the fence line real quick, to see if they had a pass through somewhere, or some signs of their travel routs….. Well that didn’t work out so good… but I always have to know where my point of failure is…. Now I know…happy/unhappy at the same time..... Determination won’t always get you there…. But with out it you go nowhere...
Title: Re: Longhammock campfire thread
Post by: gnome on July 13, 2020, 01:22:03 PM
There was a good turnout  on Sunday….   there were three groups on the course before lunch…. The first group were the serious ASA guys, they got an early start and were three station from finishing when the last group started.  The Last group is most always “the shoot an arrow between stories group”…. We got lapped by the by the first group; they got back to camp and  decided to go around again and leap froged us…. The middle group were the hunters,  they were the smartest…… one round, and beer time…..

We are now shooting a 29 target course, from 13 stations….   Twice around for 58 …. It’s like shooting a  tournament ….  only better…. You get a great lunch too….

Mark and Kara were there…. Mark is getting around after knee surgery, but is still really sore…. Kara made a set of hand crested, and feather spliced arrows in a classic brown for him, and they are absolutely gorgeous.  On the nock end she put a “thin blue line”, in support of our law enforcement….. to me, that is beyond cool….  I really like shooting with her…. Group IQ doubles when she’s there…. (and yes, I wish to be quoted on that!  :goldtooth:  ).

Next shoot is Sunday, 07/26 /2020 ..... With TBOF officially cancelled,  come shoot the new targets...

Rob grilled venison tenderloin to a perfect medium rare, and sliced it into rounds….. OMG….. I’ve never had a steak that good…damn near didn’t need teeth…. Plenty of good sides, with deep fried corn nuggets,  and jalapeno poppers…. Grand-Paw!?,... what’s for dinner?…

A huge 3D traditional archery course, good friends, and a Sunday hunt-camp lunch….. It really can’t get any better on dry land….

Turnout was very light, so we all shot in one big group…. Everyone shot the first 3 stations really well, and held it together,... mostly,... ‘till the leopard at station 7….. by then we all had started talking way more than we were shooting….. and that is only the half way point….. when no one notices, everybody has already shot, for 5 minutes, before somebody says all-in?….. that’s a fun shoot…..

With such a small showing, I can not help but worry about all of the faces we have not seen in a while, and no way of knowing how they are doing …. I hope everyone is safe and well……
Not naming names(cough,,cough), but I miss the broccoli salad,….. you know who you are...  :goldtooth:

The next Sunday longhammock shoot will be August 9, 2020.

I will admit I’m the first one to chicken little, at the first sign of anything…. Part of my   “second mouse gets the cheese”  outlook on life….. also, don’t ever be an “early worm”…...they get eaten…. Just say’n….
but even I feel pretty safe at these shoots…. we’re outside, spaced out,  and it’s probably safer than grocery shopping...

….razorback turkeylopes aren’t that aggressive….

Something new from something old is always fun.

I blame it on my grand father….. born in 1912, he lived through the great depression, rationing coupons, WWII, and three kids….. he would not throw away anything…. Back then they called it being resourceful, or frugal….. you made the most out of everything.

He passed the disease on to me, in the form of “I might need that some day...”, and “I can make a  (insert never gona happen idea here) out of that...”…… today, we live with a “throw it away” mind set, and call it hoarding…. Go figure…

Lunch, once  again, was better than any steak house….. grilled venison, and sides….. the grilled zucchini and squash was especially good….

We had two groups on the course today…. The first group is always the serious target guys…..  they went around twice before lunch again…. The rest of us are just happy to belong to “club 5”….. meaning as long as you hit foam (5 points), your good….and out here at Longhammock, Club 5 has a lot more members than “team 10”…. just say’n….

I was only able to shoot the first two stations today, and had to go sit back in camp….. I have been making some real progress this year…. in my shooting, and in my physical ability's…. walking the whole course without any aids, and shooting more 8’s than 5’s….that stopped last monday….. I lost strength and co-ordination in my legs and left side…. I’m hoping it is just something to work through, but it’s been a week, and still on crutches....  I’m not sure what the cause is, but it has been a major setback, and another tumor would just suck…. I have a standard six month check-up appointment coming up next week….we’ll see…..

just a mad nerve would be a good outcome... can't go to a chiropractor with the spinal surgeries..... I'm just going to wait it out for now.

Ya, no Chiros for me too... :dunno:  maybe ice or heat pad with Advil will help. I get a little relief with those and some daily turmeric. Some massage therapy might help too. You know yourself and what works best for you. I sure hope it works itself out soon.

The internet is a dangerous and scary place when you start typing in symptoms, it is hypochondriac heaven …. but the two thing that come up consistently, are Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or a mild stroke….. some of the symptoms of stroke are not there, such as drooping face or speech problems, but all the symptoms of MS are, and MS would explain a few more thing as well…. to see a Dr. in-person, the soonest they could bump up my appointment is next monday, .... they are doing all of there "office" visits  by phone or video now.

I really didn’t find out anything new at the Doctors Monday, but it got the ball rolling….. they are scheduling an MRI for me, and doing some more lab work. Next monday I have another followup.  The good news is, whatever happened, the effects are starting to fade, and I'm doing a lot better walking again...not quite where I was before the setback, but not needing crutches either.   I was able to shoot a round of 3D, on my home range with Tom yesterday....  We did ok.....we each had a couple great shoots, but mostly confirmed our membership to club 5...

Disaster strikes Short Hammock range!

Last week, during a freak weather event, the Short Hammock VIP facility suffered a catastrophic collapse.   Disaster relief funds have been acquired, and rebuilding will commence once the new roofing material is delivered next wednesday.

Since Mark is closing longhammock for the season, so he can hunt it , We... meaning the longhammock diehards.... are shooting at my place on wednesday nights at 5:30.

Short Hammock is an unconventional course...... it is setup in loops, with 5 or 6 stages of 6-8 targets, depending on how you want to count them.... you will shoot a minimum of 6 arrows before you pull, and 10 is better......bring enough arrows!..... the first stage of 6 targets are set at 20 and under, the second at 20 and over, there is also a 60 yard walk up and back, various flu-flu and broadhead targets, and a shooting gallery..... ya'll come shoot if you can.....

Mini update…. The VIP  tent is back up, but I got no idea where I last saw the camera… It’s probably next to one of my tabs.... Can’t seem to keep track of them either...Everybody has gotten busy with work or hunting, so the Wednesday night shoots have fallen to the wayside…… it’s just me and Tom, and we just shoot when we feel like it…..We’re both trying to get ready for the TBOF charity shoot in February…. On a personal note, my balance has improved a lot since August, still a little weak on the left side....I'm not quite back to where I was, but making good progress…. Stand by for news….   :coffee:

Ouch!…. A hard slap of reality up side the head… I have a full blow case of CHS…. (can’t hit shit)…

When I was 8 years old I started my lifelong love of squirrel hunting….that was when Granddaddy gave me my first rifle…. It was a single shot Winchester model 67 youth model…. The kind where after you closed the bolt, you had to pull back the  firing pin to cock it….Granddaddy said he had bought the youth model , sometime in the 1920’s, because the short stock fit underneath the buggy seat….I was a very good shot with it …. with the eye sight and enthusiasm of youth, one shot = one squirrel... I still have that little rifle…. Then when I was 19 or 20, I bought a used Colt Python for $200…. you could go to the police pistol range, in St. Petersburg, and buy a 50 round box of 38 wadcutters for $2.00…..back then I could clover leaf groups a 25 yards…. A 38 wadcutter, it turns out, is an awesome squirrel  round…. Most always got my limit with it.….I still have the Colt, and some of the enthusiasm, but the youth and the eye sight are long gone!…..  fast forward  to yesterday…. With general gun opening I pulled out the 22’s….. Iron sights, rifle or handgun, are now just a fond memory…. My other squirrel pistol is a Ruger 22/45 airlite .22, with a Simons 2X scope…. Even with glass on top, I can’t hit shit...it looks like handgun hunting for squirrels, is now in the realm of fantasy …..  Ouch, reality hurts… oh I have other stuff, like a really nice double trigger, double barrel 20 gauge, choked full & full, that is my favorite squirrel knocker downer, as far as shotguns go, but nothing beats squirrel hunting with a pistol…… hows that song go?… “I aint as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was”… or something like that….

...and this is Maynard, my fat little dachshund ....life is good...

Flying Eagle WMA had a small game hunt this weekend…… There is still to much foliage left on the trees for it to be good for .22 rifles yet…Yes, I can still shoot a rifle (with a scope, and a tree), I just don’t have a steady enough hold with a pistol anymore, so I ended up using the 20 gauge…. I got seven, but only collected six, with one getting hung up in a fork about 15 feet up, and no way to get it down….. hate when that happens, but it happens to the best …. if it didn’t, it wouldn’t happen to you or me.... All in all it was a good morning in the woods… but as fun as it was, I’m going back to using a .22…. cleaning shotgun squirrels has a negative fun factor … sheesh what a mess, and you still got to pick pellets…. Like granddaddy always said…. Head shot or no shot….  Half Moon in Sumter county, opens for small game in two weeks…. Stand by for news...

The new hi-tech space bow is here….. It’s a PSE carbon fiber riser, with a set of Akusta carbon/foam core limbs, and a string from stildub ( best strings ever!  ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/FLEMISH-TWIST-BOWSTRING-FASTFLIGHT-Recurve-Longbow-by-stilldub/224231761015?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649  ))…. I gotta say it sure is pretty, and way to fancy to take into the woods …… it only has a flipper rest and a plunger…. I don’t know if that still qualifys for bare bow or not… it wouldn’t be right to try and shoot off the shelf with it…...it’s definitely a target bow, and for me, that means 3D targets…. It shoots really well… it has a soft feel to the shot, that is hard to describe, other than it feels good….. I like the carbon riser, with the carbon limbs, a lot…..but ,   I did not need another bow….. wasn’t looking for another bow….. and still can’t shoot the bows  I already have…..it is 100% the result of Internet math….. Eggnog + Buy it NOW =   New Bow ….  :dunno:
