Novelty Shoot ideas for Trad Event
« on: March 12, 2006, 10:11:00 PM »
Fellas,
May 13th our club is hosting a traditional only shoot.  This shoot has been cancelled in years past because it wasn't a money maker

Sorry fellas,
I accidently pressed the wrong button before I finished the message.

Anyhow, does anyone have any good ideas to help make this event successful?  Any ideas besides the 12,10,8,5/3,2,1 scoring system?  Any ideas on novelty shoots besides long dot, survival shoots or moving target?

There are already some negative comments from the majority compound shooters.  I think if we can get 40-50 shooters thats great, but they think otherwise.

Thanks,
Bob

At Brevard Archers First Trad Only Shoot this weekend, They put a $20 bill on a bale 50yrds away. There was a charge of $1 for 2 arras to try. After everyone shot they moved closer and charged again. This kept up until someone hit the twenty. What did they get? Try the twenty and the entire Pot.
Sawdust, Wood Chips, and Shavings are as close to Potpourri as I get!!!!!!

fill baloons with helium and tie to long(15-20 yrds)string. set up several at varied distances. Even more fun on windy days(the targets jump around all over the place)....Terry

I enjoy any kind of 1 on 1 speed round comp. Is the compound portion of the club helping put on the shoot? When our local club does trad only it is just the stick folks who do the work. Besides sliver flickers are easier on targets.

Fellas,
You're giving me some great ideas.  Keep them coming.  Rob, I fear most of the compund shooters won't show.  Could you elaborate more on the speed competition?  I sure miss Idaho....many good memories.

Bow birds with Flu Flu's seems to be very popular and is fairly dramatic visualy. We made a bunch out of 5 layers of card board cut into discs.  Just a spot of red paint for a center to separate the double hits. We have the launcer behind a low building tossing them up for groups of 4 at a time. Lots of good humor, does require a feild though.  Also just to mix it up it's good to have a few tha are just cardboard rings, lots of puffed chests declaring they went through the open ring after they came down un scathed.

Mjh mentioned a couple of shoots above.

Take a deck of cards and sell each card $1 a piece, tear the card in 1/2. 1/2 the card to the shooter the other in a can. When they are all sold, {depending how many shooters you have you can sell 2 decks by having a red and blue deck}.
Now you draw 2 cards out of the can and the shooters compete head to head in some sort of speed round like the clay pigoens mentioned above. the winner gets his card put in round 2 can, and so on till you are down to the last 2 shooters and the winner splits the pot with the club.

One shoot has a post they welded about 5 feet high with a cross piece about 3 feet long. They attached some small pulley on each end of the cross piece. Now picture a string ran through both pulleys and hanging about3 feet off the ground with them strong little spring clips you can buy at office supply store. Take ziplock bags and put the same amount of water in each bag. Clip one bag on each side. Shooters get 3 arrows, they might shoot all and have to retrieve and shoot again. You hit the bag above water line and nothing happens, below water line and one bag raises and the other falls. The loseres bag is the one to hit the ground first. IT IS A HOOT!

try this ---a shop-vac, set the hose on exaust---then anchor it [the hose] sraight up  then turn it on and put a ping-pong   ball in the air stream    it will appear to levitate and bob and weave-----shoot at it from 8 or 10 yrds---mabey  a buck a shot   split the pot w/the club

Hang a few clay birds on strings at various yardages.  6 shots for a buck or two.  Winner gets 1/2.

A money shoot always gets money.  Put a few bills inside balloons, along with a bunch of emties, scattered around a shooting lane.  A few $1, a few less $5, and two $10 and one $20.  Charge them a $1 an arrow.

Anything moving:  Rolled claybirds, tennis balls, mini-basketballs(for longer ranges).

We do a log shoot, it's for fun not money but you could charge a buck to try if you wanted to.

Anyway, you shoot through a long pipe/log and try to hit what is on the other side. Many arrows will bounce off of the inside of the log. After a few tries at this you really get to know how your bow shoots.

You could do something similar and less hazardous to arrows with two rings set up between the archer and the target. They have to get it through both rings and into the target to count.

It's also something that the wheelie guys will want to take a try at if you are trying to get them to come.

one of the things that my SCA group likes to do are "slat" shoots.  use wood lath slats and either shoot to break them or shoot inbetween them at a target behind the slats.  one set up had the slats hanging from one end by string so the slats sway once hit. making it harder to hit the target behind

An SCA group I sometimes shoot with had one they called "Poison the Well".  Hula hoop 30" or so parallel to and above the ground.  From 100 yds try to drop arrows into the "well".  They did it for fun, but if you want to charge: maybe a buck an arrow; all shoot from 100, winners split 1/2 the pot, the other half to the club.  No winners, move up 10 yds and try again, etc. etc.  It's amazing how hard it is (for me) to judge the distance.  No shooting at full draw though, 'cause the arrows go too high and out of sight.

Mike, "Bamboo", I got ahold of a shop vac (mine only sucked) to try your suggestion. I set it up in the house and it worked like a champ (as long as I used the full hose and all wand sections). I moved it outside to try the shooting set-up, and the least little breeze takes the ball out of the air stream so quick no one would get a chance to shoot. Any suggestions as to a cure that would make it work out?

Use a large cardboard box with a side cut out around it or some straw bales or ply wood to block the wind. If its realy windy it just doesnt work to well. I set mine up so the ball was floating about 12" to 18"  off the end of the pipe. If it floats to high put a piece of pcv pipe in the line and drill holes in it to let the preasure off. I used some 2X4s and a cheap blue tarp to make a little wind break. Looks like a over grown dog house with no door in the front or a back on it just sides and a roof. Use a bag target for a back stop.

For our Easter shoot we took a bunch of the cheap plastic eggs and hung them from the brush around the targets with sewing thread. Inside the eggs we put slips of paper good for various prizes. Real boiled Easter eggs, cup cakes and such make for good prizes. The "Grand " prize was free registration for next months shoot. One shot at egg of your choice after your shot at the target. We really have a lot of fun doing this. We make the shots at the eggs fairly close, around 10 yards or so.  :bigsmyl:
