Probably overlooked

Great post Sam.

NY Yankee:
Not enough to just have a Boo-Boo Kit. You need to be able to treat heavy bleeding and broken bones. Knowledge as well as kit will keep you or someone else alive until you can get to medical help.

I'm going to refresh this with a heavy endorsement to carry a tourniquet.

I'm an LEO and I typically carry two with me - one for me and one for you.
They come in slightly different configurations but the concept is the same.

We've learned quite a bit in 20 years of combat overseas.  The use of tourniquets is one of these things.
Back when I was a wee lad, we learned in scouts that tourniquets were only used in extreme circumstances and that you should expect to lose the extremity you used it on because of loss of circulation.

There are documented cases of tourniquets staying on for hours to days and the limb recovering.
Do some reading, drop $25 for a decent combat tourniquet (I carry CATs but there are many good ones) and learn how to use it.

We run drills with our rookies where they're given a tourniquet to carry in academy.  Randomly an instructor will enter a classroom, fire a blank pistol and then start counting down from 20.  If your tourniquet isn't on - you drop for 20.

The point is that you have very little time with an arterial bleed.  With the blades, hunting points, even sharp sticks we're around it's not a stretch to believe you might need to stop a big bleeder.

Great topic.  Be safe!

-Jack
