Dean Torges - a beacon of unity and wisdom
« on: July 05, 2003, 06:17:00 PM »
On one of the other current threads, Dean Torges posted the following:

"Incidentally, my hunting buddy Lew is one of those rare fellas that can pick up a selfbow, compound, or recurve and shoot any one of them with equal facility. A more natural hunter I have never seen. He hunts with a compound when his carpal tunnel acts up and doesn't care what anybody thinks or sez about his gear, whatever that gear may be at the moment. Let's not forget, archery is fun. It's not war or religion or politics even when some of us insist on treating it thataway. No, it's far more important than all of that"

  On another post, Dean wrote:

(speaking about guys on his neck of the woods) "the compound guys are characteristically savvy and dedicated... Maybe we should just legalize the crossbow for archery season so that classical and mechanical archers would quit seriously ragging on each other. would almost be worth it to me just to have the poor mouthing from both sides stop".

Dean, thank you for being moderate, when there are those around us who are not.

To those of you who would make the selections of who you share the woods with  based on thier equipment, I offer you this : I seriously doubt if equipment choice has ever been an issue that would separate Dean and Lew. It has never been - nor will be - an issue between me and my hunting partners. To those of you who would find a compound shooter in thier camp to somehow lessen thier outdoors experience, I hope you can find the value lies in the man, not the bow in his hand.  Steve

Well said; Dean.  My most valued elk hunting partner next to my son, is a compound shooter and a darn good one.  He doesn't look down on the stickbow any mor then I look down on his maechanical bow.  When it's tough out there and we're workign that big boy on the last day of the season, he's the hunter i most want along side.

It does tickle me that the last two years the ol' stick has taken two elk and the wheels went without though.

Guess I missed Dean's comments (gonna go lookin now). Thanks for sharing.

I don't have much use for compound bows, but have always tried to keep an open mind about them. Who knows what infirmity might befall us in our lives. I ,for one, prefer to keep it as an option that could keep me shooting arrows into my old age if that's what it takes.

Never did understand where some people get off thinking they can change anyone by huffy, better than thou, attitude. It really only begets the same.

For the record, I don't have as much problem with the compound bow as all the gizmo's that adorn them. Always figured if I wanted to shoot one barebow with fingers, I could tear things up!!

Well, I could take it a step further and say "let the firearms hunters in archery season."  In other words just have a deer season.  That would really almost be worth it to see what equipment folks would use and to see what manufacturers would belly up financially.  Crossbows, inlines, etc    :bigsmyl:  ....Van

The 8 others in my hunt club in GA all hunt with comp*unds. They like to rag me and my "sticks" but its all in jest. We've hunter together for 20 years, now, and I'm the only one to progress to a recurve, then a longbow, and finally, the pinacle, a stickbow. One day they might wake up and smell the woodshavings...NOT! LOL. We have been good friends for years and we won't allow equiptment come between us.

Damn. Any way we can change the title of this thread before the people who know me see it? I saw another thread once that claimed I was a good shot. Buddies who shoot with me saw it before I could get the thread removed, and I'm still not done living it down.

Dean - let me tell you why I posted this thread. It's quite simple. You have made a permanent mark on today's "classical" bowyers, and you have been instrumental in the resurgence of home bow crafting. Many of us are beholden to the likes of you,  Paul Comstock and the authors of the Bowyer's Bibles for the betterment of our archery journeys. To many, you are seen as being in "the inner circle" of our form of archery. I think it's important when voices, such as yours, preach an underlying message of moderation and togetherness. I have seen - firsthand - what the devisiveness amongst men equipment choices can be. It hurts my heart. I don't look down on anyone for thier equipment choice, and would only like to see the expectations for all bowhunters to be raised by the few in "the inner circle". While you hold yourself in no great esteem, you must be aware that folks listen  - just a little more - attentatively to you, than they would to the many small voices of unknown "Steves". So there you have it, One small voice, Steve

Fair enough, Steve. But it's a whole heckuva lot healthier to listen to what a man sez than to who sez it. Them who think otherwise, as talkers or listeners, are best avoided.

Or.

But it's a whole heckuva lot healthier to listen to what a man sez in spite of who sez it.

Either way Dean, people listen, so be careful what you be saying.   :bigsmyl:

Thanks, Tom.

How about this bromide:

When you are down and embarrassed, with no place to hide, you can always count on a true friend to point a finger at you and laugh.

I don't know who said that.

Dean is like that investment guy on TV.  When Dean speaks, people listen!  A lot more would take him serious if it wasn't for that convertable hat he wares.  To Dean, the gentleman of bowhunting.

Dean,

I've known you since before you durned near guessed Spamorama was a girl, and I'd be proud to list a whole lot of nicety things behind your name...

But you are right.  When I saw this title, I thought, "whattya know, there must be two of them 'Dean Torges'!!"      ;^)

With nothing but esteem (and having benefitted from that wisdom...)

Tom / Hawkeye - you be nice to Dean, he is your elder.  Maybe inhaled a little too much baleen or early infection with squirrel-pox:-))
