VDGIF Looking at a BEAR Lic?
« on: March 13, 2009, 08:03:00 PM »
May want to take a look at the VDGIF Comment site.  There is talk of removing the bear tag from Va Big Game Lic?   Better watch this one guys.  There are many Trad. Hunters who although don't Bear Hunt enjoy having that tag on their Lic should the opportunity present itself.

Sounds like a certain group is kinda greedy to me!

Another dig at our pockets presented by houndsmen. They have my opinion on the matter.

Me too!

I've had too many hunts messed up in Craig & Allegheny county by these folks!

If they ain't chasing bear all around you in early archery season, they're ruining the late archery and black powder season!

I think they should have to have special permits, not us!

I did it too even though I don't hunt bear as it is just a silly way to gain more money and appease the dog guys. Is that really hunting?

Hmmm.
I hadn't thought of DOG LICENSING!   :bigsmyl:
I usually get coon hunters through camp in the last week of archery season. They are hunting West VA on the Nat'l Forest, but spill through VA as they go. A little unnerving for a lone woman, to be kept up, and then see the headlamps and hear people bust out of the brush and trudge on up through camp. I'd rather be sleeping so as to wake early, refreshed for the deer hunting in the morning. The security chief inside me keeps a hand on the pump gun instead, though I have never been really messed with up there.

I posted against the separate license, but I also took the time to read most of the comments from those who are for the ammendment.  A few of those comments were well thought out and made some sense.  I hope this does not alienate hunters as a whole.
Being from PA, where a separate bear license and an extremely limited season (only 2 or 3 days),  makes the possibility of ever taking a bear very slim, I feel blessed to now live and hunt in VA.  I've seen more bear in the last 3 seasons in VA than in all my other 30+ seasons combined, so I don't think limiting the number of licensed hunters in necessary.  I hope to keep the excitement of possibly harvesting one without having to pay more $$ for that right.

What is interesting is that it appears that more bear are needed to be killed in regions east of the Blue Ridge and yet they want to make the license a seperate cost?   Who's going to spend extra money on a tag if they hunt east and have a slim chance of seeing a stray bear to shoot in the first place?  Seems counter productive to their stated goals.   I have bear in my back yard and although I see plenty of sign last year was the first time I've ever seen one while hunting.  I wouldn't pay for the extra chance to bag one and I'm in bear country, but I'll take a bear if I have an opportunity and a "free" tag.

thing is Chuck that tag ain't free, you pay for it every year when you buy your big game license.

I'd willing to bet if they pass this new license BS that they don't reduce the cost of the big game license by the amount they charge for the new bear license.

It's plain and simple they are looking at more ways to produce revenue. the bear hunters don't care as it will mean less folks shooting them leaving more opportunities for themselves.   :saywhat:

Rob,
That's why I put "free" in quotes.  Yes, they probably wouldn't reduce the cost of the big game tag, or if they did it would creep back up in less then 5 years.  Remember how they took the extra tag off the archery license and didn't reduce price?  One thing on the comments I saw that troubled me.  It said that all license sales were now going into the general fund.  Is that true?  If so that's something that needs to be corrected.  License fees were set up specifically to support hunting and fishing related budgets, not some pet political project.
