Just got one from Simmons along with some TreeSharks and Safaris.  My experience was like most of yours...
skeptical at first,
had to find the right angle to pull through,
bald left forearm by the end.
God bless the simple yet effective things.
*One tip:  I use a marker to color the edge prior to sharpening just like when you hand file.  It helps to determine the correct angle to pull through.  I initially had the head not perpendicular side to side and had an uneven reduction on one side.
