Best resource for back tension draw
« on: August 22, 2018, 03:19:16 PM »
Well I thought I was using enough back tension in my draw until I shot out my shoulder a few weeks ago.  I have only shot a few arrows since then to let it heal.

Clearly, after the fact, I was drawing with my shoulder too much and strained my rotator.  I am eagerly waiting for Tom Clum Sr.'s coaching video series to come out but want to explore some additional resources in the mean time.  I have been working on my alignment and bow arm/shoulder position which has helped immensely but proper back tension during the draw is still dogging my shooting.

Any help is appreciated.  I need to get this figured out properly so this shoulder pain doesn't become a thing and I can't shoot anymore.

Thanks!

I'll modestly suggest my videos about the rotational draw as ONE possible technique.

Thanks, Arne!  I have watched quite of few of your videos but haven't checked that one out yet.  I did try a couple techniques from one of your other videos this afternoon on a light bow and it felt a lot better with the shoulder.

Saunder's Archery has a "Trap Builder" that isolates and exercises the traps.  Great tool.

There are a lot of good videos available. Along with Arne Moe and Jimmy Blackmon, I’m impressed with Clay Hayes’ video on back tension.

Another series is extremely detailed, but aimed at Olympic style shooting... look up ArcheryWinchester on YouTube. While some aspects are different than the way we shoot, there is much knowledge to be gained that IS applicable.

As Terry Green has shown in his form clock article here, alignment, IMO, is the most critical concept we need to understand!

Good luck!

I just read through Terry's pinned clock post again.  I don't know how I missed it the first time through but the door comparison of rotating through the draw rather than pulling back clicked.
