Urgent call to arms
« on: May 17, 2017, 12:10:00 PM »
Please go to the Hunting Legislation and Policies Forum.  Our Archery Season is once again being threatened with a superior implement.

just stop, we shouldnt care what others use. The xbows are no more lethal than a coumpond, in fact less so. They are loud, heavy & in fact have shorter range. Remember when we first got an archery season, everyone was against it. All said there would be tons of wounded animals. Some land owners even forbid bowhunting at the time. When everyone turned to compounds it was all the same argument. Any of this sound familiar. There is nothing new here.

The national average for a bowkilled deer is 15 yards, the NYS average is 12.  Archery seasons were designed for the bowhunter to be able to have the time to get a shot opportunity at a deer.  Because of the limitations of a true bow, be it compound, longbow, recurve, or selfbow these averages have remained the same for years.  A crossbow is pre-cocked and pre-loaded, and with the distinct rifle-like advantages such as a telescopic sight, it is a superior implement to that of a true bow.  The illuminated multi reticle scope of the Ravin crossbow has 9 dots from 20 yards to 100 yards.  It's Ad says it all, "Meet your next rifle"!!  The Zurbin crossbow does not even have rails, it has a barrel and has the ability to shoot a buckshot loaded projectile from the barrel.  How is this archery in any sense?  And then where does the AirBow fit in?  A pneumatic firearm that shoots bolts from its' barrel.  Hand drawn hand held, not mechanical advantages.  Use it during firearms season, it is not a bow.

Sir, have you ever shot one. The are not superior. They do not shoot 100 yards, though they might be advertised as such. They are loud, heavy, and from what I have seen not nearly as accurate as advertised. Many of the trad guys will out shoot them and almost all the wheel guys will. Too boot there aint no second shot. I have pulled up a follow up many times. Airbow I am not sure about dont know much about them. The zurbin is a mute point, cant shoot buckshot in NY, dont see that changing. I really want you to remeber how us bow hunters were treated when we first started. It was a very short season & there were many many people who didnt want us. Much the way we are treating the xbow guys. In the end they will not affect us, we will do what we do & so will they. Relax, live & let live, enjoy the woods & fields no matter who is hunting & with what.  Mike

I respect your opinion, but we disagree on what is archery tackle and what is not.  I am not here to debate anyone, just trying to protect the archery season from a superior implement by providing current information which is directly from the crossbow manufacturers.  God Bless and have a nice day.

Thank You, I understand, & I respect your opinion too. I really hope it all works out for everyone & that we keep our season as is. What I really miss that last weekend before the Monday gun opener actually. Maybe thats another thread. I suspect with all you guys watching out for us that it will be ok. I also believe that a bunch of guys are going to be really disappointed in what they are actually able to do with an xbow as compared to what is advertised they can do. Thanks for all you do & good luck. Best,  Mike
