Total elk greenhorn lost in the sauce. Need Unit 59 Help!
« on: July 10, 2012, 11:56:00 PM »
Howdy Gang,
First off I just want to say that I know I bit off a bit more than I can chew with this problem and that I am totally lost in the sauce. But I am very hopeful, open minded, and willing to learn.
So.... where to start.  This last winter I recently PCS'ed to Ft. Carson Colorado. Previously I was stationed at Ft. Campbell KY. The deer hunting was great down there and I had a blast. But upon finding out that I was coming to colorado I got excited for the big possiblities of big sky and big game.  By the time I got my family and I settled I had a very limited amount of time to do any research on elk hunting before the appication deadline. So by just using the Colorado Big Game hunting guide I applied for a slew of elk and deer tags, in the units that are closest to my home, Colorado Springs. I pretty much wrote it off as nothing else but a preferance point for a furture hunt.   Fast forward to to last week. I recieved two letters in the mail, one was a "We're sorry, better luck nextime" letter for my deer application. But I was surprised to find that I drew a 3rd season, Cow only rifle tag. This was my last choice on my elk application. I still recieved a prefrence point, but now I have an elk tag! my first ever!
Well the excitment soon wore off when I realized that the zone I put in for was not the zone I thought I was applieing for. I was hopeing for the zone that contained both Muller state park and Dome Rock Wildlife areas, both open to public hunting. But I found out that with more research my zone is auctally just east of both of them, Zone 59 is pretty much everything east of HWY 67 all the way to the springs. And from everthing that I have researched is almost all exclusivly private land.  This leaves me in quite a bind.  Infact I am heading out tommorrow on my day off to drive the whole zone and see if I can't find some public ground or secure some access to some private ground. I wish I could say that I had high hopes in this endevor.... at the very least I will get so see some beautiful countyside tommorrow.

Well... enought beating around the bush I guess. I spose what I am asking for is some advice or even prehaps a lead on someone who resides in the area who might grant me premission to hunt on there property. I am an archer at heart and respect the outdoors as such, but this fall I  will be touting a 30.06; hopeing to take my first ever big game animal with a highpower rifle. But believe me it was not my first choice, I'm just trying to do the best I can with the cards I have been given.

If anyone has any guidance or advice I am all ears. Any and all help will be greatly apprieated.  Thank you in advance for any and all help offered.  I will let you guys know tommorrow night if I happen to have any luck in my search tommorrow.

Aaron;
I do not live in the unit but there is plenty of public land from looking at the map overlays may take some work to get into it. I now if you go in the road past the broadmoor towards the riding stables I have seen quite a few elk in that area. Might want to start there.

Thank you. After doing some more research I think that will be the best place to start, either there or on the backside by Craig.

Mind if I ask you where you were able to find some detailed maps that show the boundarys of the state and private land.

Sure, the county El Paso has there GIS online which does a good job of boundary's for you. I live in the Denver area and go to the local map store Old Map Gallery to get maps that I need of the 7.5 minute maps to overlay that info on.

Thank you much. This has set me in the right direction. I personally don't think I will be lucky enought to take an elk this fall, but just getting out into the mountains and woods is enought for me.  Thank you again.
