Hog Hunting
« on: February 20, 2011, 08:30:00 AM »
Ok, so my hunting lease has hogs on it.  Problem has been that we only have nightime movement on camera and I've only seen one during daylight all deer season.  So I just got around to reading through the new nightime hog hunting regulations and see that its not legal to bowhunt them at night.  I see where I can get an additional free permit to use more firepower, as in high power rifle, but we're not allowed to bowhunt them.   Dissappointing.  I have no interest in shooting them with a rifle and can't think of a reason why bowhunting them would be any more dangerous than a highpower rifle at night.  Any ideas why this would be?

It's sad that the state would rather trust me to shoot at night with a rifle that can launch a bullet several thousand feet per second and travel over a mile, but doesn't trust me to shoot an arrow at under 200 fps and travels a few hundred yards.

Have you spoken to anyone in LDWF? Maybe hunting with a bow is not listed but acceptable?? Maybe?? Let us know if you get an accurate interpretation.

So far the answer I got was no, the regs specify shotgun with no larger than buckshot and rimfire rifle.  Also you can get a free permit for centerfire rifle from the area supervisor.  But no bows.  I'm calling one of the enforcement agents in my area tomorrow to see if he says anything different.
I won't be able to make the shoot Saturday.  It my daughters 2nd birthday party.  Friday we're taking her fishing cause that's what she wants to do for her birthday and mommy said we would do what she wants.

The answer I got from enforcement today was shotgun and 22 rimfire only.  No archery.

Ken let me know when you get back in town and we'll get together to shoot or chase hogs.

Hey Brother,
It may have something to do with personal safety, but at any rate looks like it would be left up to the hunter. Ever thought of trying to lure them out during daylight hours? You could find or dig you out a trench or hole in the ground, covered with visqueen/plastic and pour out some soured corn and get ready.
                                  Good Luck!

Is it still illegal to use bows at night the regulations say any legal firearm, and you can used suppressed weapons now... So dose that include our silent sticks?
