I swear that those yotes came in because of my grunt call. I was playing around with it and had the pitch a little high. Hope it works for something can't ever call a buck with it worth a darn!

Just returned from a public ground hunt near Gavins Point Nebraska with a few of my closest friends.
This was to be a selfbow only hunt, we all had stonepoints and bone points mounted on rivercane and cedar arrows. I had only one rivercane arrow tipped with a stone point, the rest were cedars and 145 grain grizzlies-
Long story short, I chose to hunt on the ground and set my ambush in what appeared to be a well traveled route, two deer came in mid day and offered a 10-12 yard shot- I was so tore up! shooting an arrow i made with wrapped turkey feathers, stone point and selfknocked etc... well I shot low right under the chest and managed to jam some hair in between the stone point and the rivercane- no blood just hair so I was relieved that all in all a clean miss not a wounded deer.
So an hour or so later 3 more deer come through and I am standing this time with my ghillie suit on and ready, the shot was six yards or closer- man what a rush to hunt with a selfbow on the ground and on public ground! This was my first selfbow kill and the first deer I've taken on public ground!
A great hunt with my best friends, these are the times I live for!

We shot arrows into the lake to honor those that came before us and some of our friends who have passed on.

Shot this doe 10-20-09 Missed the first shot at 19 yards then she presented me with another shot at about 23-24 yards. Got both Lungs and a short recoverey about 50-60yards. She ended up in the middle of the creek.I also just figured out how to use photo bucket I think the pic looks pretty cool!!

Great work guys.  You keep this up, you will HAVE to change your handle!

I filled another antlerless tag on Oct. 21 while still-hunting through CRP cover.  Thought it was a doe but turned out to be a big button buck.  It was much bigger than the other deer it was with (which was probably a fawn doe).  I think the photo shows how I might've been fooled.  Not thrilled about that, but the hunt was conducted honorably and it's my third deer off the ground this fall and that feels good.

I know Ed Baustian rattled in and killed a nice 110ish 5x6 last night with his recurve.  Things are picking up.

oh man that is nasty! Let us know what the biologist has to say about that!

Well no turkey killed tonight, I did have 8 bucks check my decoy though. First year I've tried this tactic- it's working good right now, I think we are still in the "seek" phase as I only saw one buck grunt and chase a doe momentarily. The biggest two came in pretty much together and one actually sniffed the rear end of the decoy, whirled around 5 yards and stood there for another 6 or 8 minutes. These were both main frame 8's about 120 inches- hard to let these walk by especially at 10 yards but I do it every year hoping that I see the big one and that these grow another year, the one had about 9 inch eye guards and was just perfect side to side, hope he survives the orange army. Next week should be good, I'm hoping to get at least a taste of the rut. Good luck everyone, thinking about puttin on the ghillie suit for a little ambush on the turkeys, they pick me off in the tree almost every time-

Right Trail,
Last night was the first time I'd tried the decoy this year and I had two very nice bucks come in and confront the decoy, all puffed up, walking sideways, ears laid back, etc.  Very cool.  One even hooked horns with it.  All this at 10 yards and on video.  Very exciting.  Like you, I just couldn't drop the string although I really wanted to.  I'd say these two would've grossed 130.  It's been crazy for the last week and you just gotta believe next week is going to be even better.

I tried my decoy and I saw nothing!! Although I don't really think it was the decoys fault. I will be trying it again next week. Good luck guys!

Boy do I wish I could be out this week. Spent almost all last weekend out, all day Sat and most of Sun with out seeing a single deer. Why do we have to have this day light saving time. Before I could make it out for an hour or 2 after work. Oh well guess I will have to wait for Thanksgiving weekend. Good luck to all who can still make it out this week. Before the orange army moves in.

It has been pretty slow for me latley. Although tonight I missed a Monster. I think the dreamy doe decoy spooked him a little.

Eric W there's no reason to wait until Thanksgiving weekend. In case you did not know Desoto Bend is open to archery all through the rifle season. There are some excellent places to set up on the ground there. Iowa side or NE side, take your pick, it,s all Federal land. There will be quite a few trucks there , but don't get discouraged, there are plenty of places to hunt.

I had a whole story wrote and my #%*@ computer went down before I hit the add reply button. So here is the short story. Sat a stand to night about 200 yards from the interstate and grunted a small buck in. Was using the second Pearson Deadhead that Wade was so kind as to give me. Aready took a turkey with one and I really wanted a deer with one also.
Here is the view of my stand from where the deer was quartering away from me.

first half of arrow 3 yards from impact.

second half 15 yards down the trail.

and I would guess about 45 yard from stand.
