My attempt to get deer #2
« on: November 28, 2012, 03:32:00 PM »
Think I'll use this as kind of a log to show how my hunts are going.  I only have public land to hunt but they do have deer, plenty of them.  It is just a matter of me being in the right place at the right time.

Heading to Cypress Bayou in a few minutes.  This is a small wma about 1300 acres four miles from my house.  It consist of small oaks and some pines.  It is a replanted area and the trees are maybe 40 feet tall and it is very thick.  A treestand is pretty much a no go so I will be hunting from my "tourge" seat and wearing my ghillie.

You guys pull for me ok?

Nov 28

Got to the wma (cypress bayou)at 3pm.  My plan was to hunt over a rub line so I headed that way.  I was about 200 yards short of my spot and was coming in from a new direction to compensate for the wind direction.  I discovered a very thick nasty bedding area with a nice trail coming out of it.  My original rub line was so close but my gut said hunt this new spot.

I got set up and anything coming down the trail would be 10 yards away in one shooting lane and 15 in the other lane. It is a thick place.  The hunt was on.

About 4:30 I saw a deer in front of me but instead of coming down the trail it was quartering to my right.  I never got to see if it was a buck or doe, could just see bits and pieces of it going through the thicket.

A short while later I heard a strange noise.  I I have heard does call to thier fawns, I have heard fawns bleat and I have heard bucks grunt kind of like a pig.  The sound I heard tonight was none of those.  It sounded like "Cha-huff" It was kind of fast lasting about 2 seconds or a bit less.  It sounded like it was within 50 yards of me.

As it got dark I started packing up my stuff.  I walked about 20 yards away from my tree and all of a sudden I could smell him!  Man he must have been close.  I hope I can figure that fellow out and get him.

I have to clean the chimmeny tomarrow but I plan to be back in the woods after lunch.  The saga continues.....

Man nothing like getting the wind on a rank buck. I Had one a few years back that I played cat and mouse with for four consecutive mornings. Problem was he was on a top between two hollers running north and south and the wind always swirled the wrong way.
I hope you get him.

The wind swirled all afternoon so I stayed away from the buck I found yesterday.  The way the wind kept shifting I wasn't really suprised that I didn't see any deer.  When the wind is right again I plan to go back after him.

Went out after it quit raining.  Stinky buck was still stinky but never saw him or any other deer.  I didn't see any beside the road when I drove home either.

I was sweating this evening.  It isn't suppose to be this warm this time of year.  The mosquitoes had a feast.  If the wind ever comes from the north again my stands will be huntable again.  Until then I just keep exploring.  Found a tiny clearing in a thicket today.  it hd 3 trails coming into it and had deer poo a'plenty.  No luck today though.

We got about a foot of snow on Christmas day.  I knew this would be a great time to go scout Cypress bayou some more but unfortunately I became sick as a dog.  It has been 5 days and today was the first time I felt god enough to go walk the woods.

I was suprised at how few tracks there were over the area I walked but when I did find tracks the trails looked good with heavy use.

The area where I could smell the buck a few weeks ago was calling to me so I went to check the area out better.  Wouldn't you know it, there was a climber on the same tree I had put my Tourge's seat on.

I did see 2 deer but with the hacking I was doing I knew hunting was out.  i'll give myself a few more days to get better then i'm going to get after them again.

It's been 2 weeks since I have been able to go hunting.  I have been very sick with the flu and there was no way I could go.  Today I went even though I'm still coughing.

I think I had a deer walk behind me, sure sounded like one.  It was on the wrong side so i didn't turn around to see it.  I hoped it would come on out where I could see it but it just kept going to my right and soon was gone.

Just before dark I had some coyotes come within 30 yards but there was no shot.  That ended my day's hunt.  At least i saw signs of life.  Now if I can only get rid of this cough.
