Toughest animal to take with stick and string????
« on: November 26, 2005, 09:49:00 PM »
So what does everybody think is the hardest game animal to take with traditional bows??? I live out west so the toughest one would be cougars with out dogs. But I think that elk are really tough with any weapon. So what does everyone think?? I almost forgot I'm talking north america not the whole world. I can't afford to go many plaecs. but I can hunt alot of different animals from the good ol USA. Thanks for you time.

In the US, with a trad bow, I'd say turkey, a mature whitetail buck is right there with it except that goes for any weapon.

If you don't live out west you may not of heard of them.  My vote goes to the gray ghost of the desert the Coues Whitetail.  Getting one with a rifle is hard enough.  Jack Oconner called them the poor mans Bighorn sheep.  They are waiting for you in the high deserts of Arizona.

For me it was Elk. I put a lot of effort and miles into getting my first ever elk this year. Many years of hard knocks finaly came together, but these are a critter that takes time to learn how to hunt.
When it did happen it all seemed so easy. LOL

Northern New England turkeys are my nemisis. In the last three outings I have tried in vain to surround a flock of them by myself. They seem to know my effective range. I put my wife on my favorite deer stand last nite and she missed a turkey at ten yards by shooting just over it. Now she feels like I do....just gotta settle the score with them.

Mature whitetail doe. Even big bucks get careless once a year. Not so the old does. If I ever arrow an old one with a white muzzle its going on the wall.

I would think that the predators would be the toughest. Coyotes are hunters with keen eyes, nose and ears, and they are smart like a dog, very crafty. I have only ever kill one with a bow. I consider shooting a mature deer a piece of cake compaired to coyote.

Having been most of the way around the block a couple of times I'm just sure that the answer isn't gray squirrels or any other color of squirrel.  I'm also sure the answer is not whitetails, elk, or turkeys.

Try canoeing down a river for 3 days, then packing with a 60 pound pack ten-twelve miles thru brush (since then we found an easier way by wearing hip boots and crawling up a steep gradient mountain stream)just to get to a place to set up camp.  This is what Danny "AKDan" did prior to killing his '02 dall ram.  We did a repeat of the pack in in '03 but no rams taken.

I suspect the day-in-day-out answer is Coues deer.  I have found coyotes to be very difficult but have friends that seem to semi-regularly arrow them.

Without taking into consideration actually getting to the place you are hunting, I have to agree with Shaun--there should be a place in the record books for whitetail does.

Squirrels can be a bugger to hit, but they aren't that hard to get a shot at.  Coyote can be tough, but I've come close to getting a shot whithout really trying.

I figure a lot of it has to do with where you are and where you hunt too.  It seems that the deer in some places don't get much pressure and/or are just not real bright, while others seem to be born looking over their shoulder.  Where I hunt, my vote goes to the mature whitetail doe.

I hear the Coues deer and Blacktails are very difficult to hunt, but I haven't had the opportunity to hunt them.
I have to agree with Steve, one of the hardest animals I've hunted, has to be the Dall's sheep.  The terrian and their keen senses kick my butt everyday.
