Gene is actually too modest and is a much better stalker than he will admit.  Last Christmas I watched him sneak up and grab the leg of a butterball turkey and then to prove it was no fluke, he stealthily made a successful sneak on the cheesecake.

Ryan...

Looks like we'll be in camp together for a while in OZ.  I'm getting there about the 25th of May and hunting for three weeks.  Doug Otte, who was in the fire with in Cananda, may be joining me.  Looking forward to getting together.

Got that right about the Butterball and the Cheesecake.  I was hunting with him in Alabama or Georgia one time and we went into a Shoney's for breakfast.  While we were waiting for a table, ol' Gene went over to a table that had just been vacated and cleaned up all the leftovers...NO LIE!  I've never seen anything like it.

In camp, you lock up your food, or you'll get back and find two beached whales next to an empty food box!  It's always a HOOT, though!

Short Bred,
What's a "leftover?" No such thing.
I figured out why you'd best not buy a harp. Your arms ain't long enough to reach the far strings.
Why don't you show these guys a picture of your recent mule deer so they can compare ears?

Dont know whether it is good or bad, based on Gene's posts, but just by reading this thread I think some of the Too Short Karma must have rubbed off on me.

Went to check out a new spot I have to hunt yesterday.  Property basically has two long waterways about 40 yards wide(almost half mile long)full of trees, rest of the property is crops.  These water ways run North/South, so I headed South down one with a strong Westward cross wind.  Was about a 100 yard walk across field to first tree.  Got to the first tree, took off my pack, put on my face mask, gloves, etc.  Started to bend down to get my pack and I catch movement in the trees South of me.  Two deer are looking my way acting spooky.  Remembering the info from this thread I squatted.  Remembering the thread on shape shifting I immediately looked at a tree next to one of the deer and concentrated on it tree, tree, tree....

It was like magic. The deer immediately stopped acting spooky and started working their way towards the woods directly to me.  They stopped about 20 yards away and the old doe bedded down while the two youngsters milled around.  One of them always had an eye in my direction.  When my right leg fell asleep and was past the tingling stage to the nonfeeling stage I had to do something.  Wasnt planning on shooting any of these deer and really wanted to see the rest of the property, so I stood up slowly when one of the young ones was watching.  It became mildly alarmed so momma doe had to get up and see what was going on.  She still wasnt sure what she was looking at so she started trying to get in a position to wind me.  She never got far enough to be downwind, but just to be on the safeside, she went ahead and trotted off with the young ones in tow.

Guess you could call this a true motionless stalk.  Deer came to me so I didnt have to take my boots off  :)   and it was good thing I wasnt wanting to shoot one because my bow was hanging on a tree limb, but learned that the shape shifting thing works  ;)

Gene...how could I have forgotten that after all the times you stayed with us up at the ranch?  There was NEVER a left over!  Even if we had a huge Prime Rib!

A word of warning to all:  If you ever do one of the Wensel hunts and go out to dinner with them, KEEP YOUR HANDS WELL AWAY FROM THE AREA SURROUNDING THIER EATING PLATFORMS.  YOU COULD LOSE DIGITS IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL!

Hooked...  motion and motionless are two really critical points in stalking.  I have found times where I actually snoozed waiting for things to settle or change.  Not good if you snore...

I've seen the Bushmen just plain go to sleep...sometimes for an hour or more.  Also, learned from them that if you are trapped like that and lying on your belly and nature calls, just slowly roll on your side and whiz lying down.  Just don't roll over in it or crawl through it!!!

Well, I just wanted to see who read other threads!  I wouldn't mind crawling through my own, but I don't know the different qualities that might be in Bushman Pee.  Maybe it's even better as a scent?  Hmmm?
