Another great bowhunter presumed dead
« on: October 04, 2004, 02:26:00 PM »
I just got some terrible news from my buddy Mike Mitten. Paul Schafer's good friend Bart Schleyer is missing and presumed dead from a bear attack in British Columbia. He had recently finished a Stone sheep hunt and was flown into interior BC for a moose hunt alone. When he didn't show for his pick up, RCMP went in for a search. Weather conditions were not good. They found his camp but no sleeping bag. They called off the search due to bad weather. Friends from Alaska were not satisfied with the quick search (no bow, no arrows, no pack or sleeping pad) so they flew in with a Super Cub. They found his bow, arrows, sleeping bag, pack and a blood soaked face mask. Because of various clues at the camp, they speculate Bart was stalked and killed by a grizzly, possibly the first day in camp (Sept. 14). Two weeks went by before anyone realized anything even happened. It has been too long to survive without a sleeping bag. Its time for some heavy praying.
RCMP is planning on returning with dogs and choppers as soon as the weather breaks, probably today. Bart was a soft spoken guy with a big heart and a great smile. He and Paul Schafer were best of friends and a lot alike. Paul backed up Bart on his brown bear bowhunt and filmed the kill. Bart lived an adventurous life. Ironically, Bart gave me the cast foot print of a huge Montana grizzly he cast years ago. The last time Mike Mitten saw him, he was fleshing a grizzly hide and they spoke of hunting bears together soon. Most recently Bart spent several years tracking and trapping Siberian tigers. You have probably seen him on the Discovery channel. He recently taught India officials his tiger trapping techniques. Bart started guiding bear hunters this past spring and was 3 for 3 on grizzlies in Alaska. He had started building a horn bow. Bart was a soft spoken guy who truly loved wilderness, wildlife and hunting with simple traditional gear.
I will let you know if we get any further information. Until then, your prayers are much appreciated.

Hoping for the best, but it sounds like he went the way he lived...free spirited and in the wild.

Very sorry to hear this bad news........  I recall hearing Bart's name on occassion and trust the worst is not realized.  The only bright spot is that he was out doing what he loved, rather than lying in a hospital bed wasting away from some insidious disease.

My prayers are added for his safe return.  TL

I pray for good results, but it doesn't sound good to me either. I'll pray for family and friends.

That sucks...I saw the video of Schaf' backin' up Bart on his bear hunt in Alaska and thought..what better man to have as backup...First Schaf', then Jeff Booth, Now Bart..they played in Gods Country, and cheated death meany times I'm sure, but they were men who lived for true adventure with stick and string. My prayers go out to the Schleyer family, altho it doesnt sound good. Godspeed Bart.
