Mark: You're dead wrong.. sorry to say I am one of the unluckiest bowhunters I know. Just last year I had a DOZEN close encounters with giant whitetails where the pendulum could have gone either way and it went against me every time. A buck would walk left instead of right; or stop in the only spot I couldn't shoot; or the wind would do a 180 degree turn the only time all day just before the big guy took "one more step" etc. One time I had two 150" plus bucks following four does. The does walked by at ten yards. The bucks were following 25 yds. behind the does. Thirty yards and closing and the bucks break out into a fight whereas the one pushed the other over an embankment and neither came by. Why couldn't they be friends for ten more seconds? Don't take me wrong, I had a magnificent season last year because I hunt for the experiences. But you don't normally toss the coin a dozen times and have it come up tails 12 for 12. Therefore, if any of you guys want to wish me luck and put me in your prayers, I'll gladly accept it. Regarding my equipment, why do I have the feeling this will create a volley of questions that I probably won't have time to answer? Anyway, since my arm surgery (twelve screws and two plates) I've had to drop down in bow weight. I'm also not supposed to climb any treestands I can't climb with one hand. Therefore I've been hunting mostly out of ladder stands. Because the lower limb of my 60" and 62" bows just barely cleared the side-rails of some of the ladders, I went down in bow length too. My newest bow is a custom takedown recurve made by Dale Dye in Hamilton, Montana. It's 58" and 60 lbs. at 28". The riser is Macasser (striped Ebony) with lams of Holly, Satinwood and Bloodwood. The darker ebony makes the lighter colored Medicine Point (Pierce Points)lams really stand out. I also have the checkered handle. It's a work of art and more importantly it "fits" me. I shoot the skinny carbon shafts for better penetration, regular old Cabela's 230 SST's, yellow cap-wraps, fletched with three yellow five inch feathers and 125 gr. Wensel Woodsmans leading the way. Works for me! BW

Hey Uncle Barry,
I remember one of those unlucky moments in in one of your videos; you was standing behind a tree and blew one right over his back (if memory serves me correctly).

You're probably right about the "feeling" -- volley of questions.

PS: I still say my Nilgia could kick your Nilgia's ass in a fair fight.

It's a bitch gettin old ain't it Barry. I think someone should make a special stand for Seniors with a battery powered escalator.  ;)

Those ladder stands are nice but you can't move em around like other stands. Last year I bought a Gorilla stand. I hauled it to my tree and assembled it, occasionally looking at the directions. I put two of the three sections together, raised it up on my shoulder and wrestled the third section into place. After I got the darn thing up I read that it was supposed to take three men to put it up. I guess I'm not as old as I thought.   "[laffsmyl]"

Hi Barry,

Your brother said it well

"no amount of preparation or experience will ever replace dumb luck!"

We all need some of that luck and that is my wish for us all. My prayer is that none of us get hurt this season.

God bless
Ray

Barry,

If you had to drop in bow weight to 60#'s, what were you shooting before?  I recently made the jump from 53 to 60 and am having to really work on building up my strength.  I can shoot it no problem, but can feel it in my shoulder and back for a couple days after shooting alot.  Is that sweet corn up in Iowa loaded with steroids or something?

Brother Gene and/or son Brad hang all my stands for me know. I can do it but it hurts and if I slipped I wouldn't have the strength to catch myself. Most of my life my bows were in the low 70lb. range. Then I dropped back to 64 lbs. But now with my bad arm even with 60 lbs. my arm starts throbbing after only a dozen or so shots. When I push it I get sloppy and develop bad habits. And Don (Slime) it's Nilgai not Nilgia. And I'll have you know just before I shot that big Nilgai bull he told me he had just whupped your bulls ass! Say hi to Slimier and Slimiest too. And RayMo, regarding Gene's quote, did he tell you he killed a 166" buck out of my stand last year when I was in Colorado? That's his M.O..  hunt Barry's stands when he's not around, that way Gene's will be fresh when he gets back. What are brothers for.. other than hanging stands? BW

Barry-Hurricane Frances is bearing down on us here in Jupiter Florida today. Should I take down my Mckenzie target and if not, how much  wind allowance would you recommend in hurricane force winds. I have seen your videos and with all those running shots you've made, I figure you'd know. Thanks, PS -I would be practicing from the ground as my wife made me take down my treestand.

Barry, with regards to the SST's, have you found any problems with the outserts? Like pulling them from targets? Mounting them on the shafts? etc....

Thanks

Joey: No problems with outserts whatsoever. Marty, Last I heard Ruth Anne was trying to talk you into practicing from a metal ladder stand under the single tree in your back field during that last lightning storm. Regarding practicing in hurricane force winds.. just shoot with the wind at your back. Your arrows will fly really fast. If that hurricane Frances is in fact really coming, I'd suggest you take your most prized possessions (those photos of me and you) and drive up to visit Biggie for a few days. BW

Barry-Hurricane is really coming,in fact first feeder bands went thru. Ruth Ann took her prized possessions(horses) and went to Georgia 2 days ago. I guess I know where I stand.Great advice on wind arrow flight, however target already gone. I hit where it was-kinda like jumping the string.I'm sure I woulda killed it.

Marty: The wind just picked up. We got a gust that hit 7 MPH a few minutes ago. The Temperature is about 65 degrees but with that gust our windchill dropped her to 64. What should I do? BW
