Thanks Anthony. I hope to go back again this year. I plan to take at least two full weeks off work. In the past I've hunt the first week and the last week on seperate years. My experience was the the last week there were less hunters but the number of elk did not seem to be any different than the year I hunted the first week. I plan on doing more backpacking this year. I'm going to set up a base camp of sorts from my car and do 2-3 day bivies from there. Then I go into town and a get a shower at a little RV park. Helps to keep me going. As time draws nearer I will take you up on the help. Thanks again.

Don't be afraid to apply for the draw units in the Flattops (I hunted 23/24/33 combo unit in '98 and '00).  They often don't require preference points and if you don't get drawn, you can still hunt the OTC units (look at 25).  Costs $3 I think.  Then you get a preference point and you are good for next time.

You have gotten great advice so far but don't undersetimate the effect the altitude will have on you.  And get in the best shape of your life or you won't want to hunt even the 7 days you are talking about.  Trust me on this.  I prefer bivy hunting but it does have the disadvantage of being 5 miles in someplace and having to pack back out if the elk aren't there.

Keep moving until you find elk.  I mean until you see them or hear them or find that steaming pile.  Have fun.
Take a kid hunting!
