Title: New Tradition Archer from Orange
Post by: RedStag5728 on November 21, 2012, 10:19:00 AM
Hello All!

Figured I'd start off by introducing myself. My name's Randy Jones and I'm from Orange County (Virginia of course). I am new to traditional archery, I just started it this year, got a new longbow for my birthday a Carpathian Traditional Archery (CTA) Red Stag 64" longbow 57# @ 28".

I am 23 years old, and I am currently a full time student at University of Mary Washington, currently I'm in my senior year and expected to graduate in the Spring (2013) and my major is Computer Information Technology. Even though I am new, I have done some preliminary research on proper tuning of arrows I bought online which is Easton's Traditional Archery Only carbon shafts 400 spine (9.1 gpi) at 28.5" (my draw is 26.5" and probably around 53 pounds) and currently I am shooting 145 grain field points. And I've pretty much been scouring this forum before deciding to join. I've also been practicing with the bow and getting pretty decent at it, however my form still needs a little work.

What got me into traditional archery was that I am a compound bow hunter of 10 years, I took my first deer when I was 13, a decent 6 pointer. And I am to the point where I can shoot a 1/2" group at 35 yards. So I wanted to challenge myself more and my folks all began shooting crossbows   :knothead: , so I wanted to go the other direction and therefore I decided to go traditional.

So I just wanted to say hello and I am looking forward to meeting you all and expanding my knowledge and experience with traditional archery, and get to the point where I can make my own equipment and kill some deer with it.

Welcome Randy.
Several of us on here are in the Charlottesville area.  We go to a number of 3D shoots each year.  In fact, we'll likely go to the Dixie Bowmen shoot (near Petersburg) in January.  Check their website.  It's a monthly event through the winter and spring  Maybe we can meet you there sometime.
Traditional archery is surely addicting, so beware   :)
Just have fun with it, and the confidence to kill deer will definitely come.

Good luck!

Thanks Cool Springer! Sounds great, I just started Traditional Archery this year and I've been practicing heavily at 20 yards, and occasionally out to 25 yards.

I'm pretty confident that I can kill a deer out to 20, I can consistently shoot about a 6" group and sometimes a 4 or less. Beyond 20 though my groups are slightly bigger lol. But I practice everyday and that's all that it takes.

I definately prefer my longbow over my bow with training wheels, it's surely a lot more fun. I will get more practice in at home and maybe I'll join you guys in a 3d shoot without making a fool out of myself    :smileystooges:

Randy, if you ever want to get together and do some fine tuning or just shooting, let me know.

I will try to leave a few deer in Orange for you this fall!   :biglaugh:

Allen

Hey Randy,  Hope to bump into you this year.  You might want to take Ol' Allen up on some lessons.  That fella can shoot.  I'm a member of Dixie Bowmen.  It's a great place to shoot.  Jeff

Thanks Jeff and Allen. I will definately check out the Dixie Bowmen, and maybe when things warm up a little bit and hunting season is done with (and school is finally out) I'll take you up on that offer, Allen.

Welcome Randy!  Sounds like you are set to have some fun with a new direction.  Good luck with everything.  But be careful who you associate with.  Dixie Bowman is full of great members and Nook is right that Allen knows how to place an arrow where he wants it.  But if you start hanging out with those guys, well....you'll see.......

yeah I've had em all along that I've been at Mary Washington. I had a class yesterday morning at 11am which is a gym course I'm taking as an elective. And then last night a Philosophy course (another elective) which nearly puts you to sleep, and then an hour drive home (i'm a commuter). Needless to say when I got home, I was already ready for bed.

Matter of fact I've got one tonight as well from 6 - 8:45pm, at least this course is a little more interesting (psychology).

Hey Randy,  Pleasure meeting you.  Should be a better turnout and more campers next year at Dixie.  We are setting up a new parking and hopefully camping area on another piece of the property.

The Cool Springs Gang are several traditional bowhunters in and around the Charlottesville area.  We get together and shoot at Dannys house once a week.  People ask where Cool Springs is located.  It's wherever we gather to hunt, shoot and discuss the later.  Hence, no website.

Hope to see you soon.  Jeff
