Gosh darn it I have Husker Harvest Days so I'll have to wait for the weekend. But then again new customers can possibly mean new places to hunt!

I'm blessed to have two wonderful daughters, both of whom have spent a lot of time following me around and probably alternately amaze and bore their classmates and teachers with stories from the natural world.  They both like to fish and shoot bows and my youngest, Emily (6), is especially into nature and spends most of her free time catching frogs and snakes.

Well, I've taken them bowhunting but as you know a lot of things have to go right to "get something" when you're alone, even more so when there is an overanxious kid along.  Plus, I pretty much will only take a mature doe or big buck, and the chances of that happening are not too good under the conditions present.  Emily wanted to go out Friday evening with me and we went to the buddy stand and it was just dead still.  So much so that I just knew it wasn't going to happen.  But 15 minutes in, she said she saw a deer and soon enough I saw the tail flick in the grass too and here he came.  It was a very small spike buck, but the wheels began turning in my head and I realized he would qualify under NE's regs as an antlerless deer and I could tag him on my season choice tag, not endangering my two either-sex permits that I have other high hopes for.

Anyway, Emily whispers for me to shoot it, so when it pauses at 13 yards I lean over the side railing of the buddy stand and drill it perfectly through the lungs and top of the heart.  It scrambles off 40 yards and piles up in the high grass from which it came.  I looked back at Emily (she had a great angle to watch the shot) and her smile said it all.

She led the way on the ample blood trail, and was so into it that she walked right past the deer 8' away as the blood trail went a few yards past and then stumbled back in a tight fishhook pattern.  Got that part on video (botched getting it started on the shot).

Pretty happy day for Dad and daughter, that's for sure.

Great job Bryce! Just don't get any better than that. Got to love spending those times in the woods with your kids. Spent the last week out west with my dad trying for antelope and deer. He passed on a couple of small antelope bucks early in the week and regrets it, but had a great time anyway. He did have a few other bucks come in but only had one shot and missed. I had a nice 8 point whitetail buck at 12 yards and he caught me drawing and busted out. Lots of "what if" moments but a grea week away from everything.

Yeah, isn't it amazing how 40 acres in eastern NE might be an entire property that you have permission on, and yet out in western NE it's nothing.  Great pictures.  This is a great time of year, isn't it?

Way to go Bryce! Heck I haven't even been out yet and my South Dakota hunt was a bust- way too much water up there this year and we were pretty early to try and decoy, I did get to about 40 yards on a group but got busted by a kid that walked up to 12.......mmmmm three hour stalk on my belly in the cactus, priceless! Ha good luck to you all.

Shot this guy Friday nite during all that wind (Oct. 2) after stalking in on him in a standing cornfield.  Shot was a little back so recovery had to wait for morning and coyotes beat me to him.  I did up a little thread about it on the PowWow called 30mph wind hunt or something like that.

Shot this one last night, smoked him at 23 yards on camera. This is actually my first longbow buck after passing on many over the years, thought I was just going to be a doe shooter forever!

That's a great looking buck, guess you need to change your handle to Right Trail, Right Time.    :)    Congrats!

Have added a couple does to the meat pole.  On Oct. 6, took this doe while standing in the standing corn overlooking a trail I knocked down with my vehicle in the high grass rimming the cornfield.  10 yards, double lung, short recovery.

Took another doe fairly early Sat. afternoon, Oct. 10, on a different property.  The doe was really wired so had decided to pass on the shot but then she began scratching her nose with her opposite rear hoof.  No way she's gonna jump string doing that!

Ended up hitting low at 20 yards--right on/through the elbow and into the chest cavity just below/behind the heart.  This trail was a first for me.  Blood trail was at least 1000 yards!  That's a THOUSAND, not hundred.  Arrow stayed in 300+ yards and most of the blood trail was a 'walker' although I took it slow in case a follow-up presented itself.  An hour later and the deer had gone WELL over a half-mile and possibly 3/4 mile, and I come up on her...I think she'd just bled completely out as there was no damage to the heart.

We're in the middle of a three-day antlerless rifle season in eastern NE hence the blaze orange.

A lesson here is to stay on the blood even if convinced it is a flesh wound.  Obviously I would never quit as long as I had blood, and even after that would do a grid search, but this was quite a trail.  I've included a picture of the entry wound so you can see exactly where I hit.  Notice the burrs (beggar's lice) all over the deer.  That was fun picking those out after the hunt (at least they come off the Sitka stuff fairly easy but there were HUNDREDS).

Well I drew blood just not what I was expecting to come in for a 12 yard shot. But a coyote is one that I have never taken before so I can call it a first!!! I could not believe how much they can chew up an arrow in the short time it took for it to expire. The second yote hung around till dark about 50 yards from where I was.

Just returned from a public ground hunt near Gavins Point Nebraska with a few of my closest friends.
This was to be a selfbow only hunt, we all had stonepoints and bone points mounted on rivercane and cedar arrows. I had only one rivercane arrow tipped with a stone point, the rest were cedars and 145 grain grizzlies-
Long story short, I chose to hunt on the ground and set my ambush in what appeared to be a well traveled route, two deer came in mid day and offered a 10-12 yard shot- I was so tore up! shooting an arrow i made with wrapped turkey feathers, stone point and selfknocked etc... well I shot low right under the chest and managed to jam some hair in between the stone point and the rivercane- no blood just hair so I was relieved that all in all a clean miss not a wounded deer.
So an hour or so later 3 more deer come through and I am standing this time with my ghillie suit on and ready, the shot was six yards or closer- man what a rush to hunt with a selfbow on the ground and on public ground! This was my first selfbow kill and the first deer I've taken on public ground!
A great hunt with my best friends, these are the times I live for!

We shot arrows into the lake to honor those that came before us and some of our friends who have passed on.

Shot this doe 10-20-09 Missed the first shot at 19 yards then she presented me with another shot at about 23-24 yards. Got both Lungs and a short recoverey about 50-60yards. She ended up in the middle of the creek.I also just figured out how to use photo bucket I think the pic looks pretty cool!! Great work guys.  You keep this up, you will HAVE to change your handle!

I filled another antlerless tag on Oct. 21 while still-hunting through CRP cover.  Thought it was a doe but turned out to be a big button buck.  It was much bigger than the other deer it was with (which was probably a fawn doe).  I think the photo shows how I might've been fooled.  Not thrilled about that, but the hunt was conducted honorably and it's my third deer off the ground this fall and that feels good.

I know Ed Baustian rattled in and killed a nice 110ish 5x6 last night with his recurve.  Things are picking up.

oh man that is nasty! Let us know what the biologist has to say about that!

Well no turkey killed tonight, I did have 8 bucks check my decoy though. First year I've tried this tactic- it's working good right now, I think we are still in the "seek" phase as I only saw one buck grunt and chase a doe momentarily. The biggest two came in pretty much together and one actually sniffed the rear end of the decoy, whirled around 5 yards and stood there for another 6 or 8 minutes. These were both main frame 8's about 120 inches- hard to let these walk by especially at 10 yards but I do it every year hoping that I see the big one and that these grow another year, the one had about 9 inch eye guards and was just perfect side to side, hope he survives the orange army. Next week should be good, I'm hoping to get at least a taste of the rut. Good luck everyone, thinking about puttin on the ghillie suit for a little ambush on the turkeys, they pick me off in the tree almost every time-
Todd

Right Trail,
Last night was the first time I'd tried the decoy this year and I had two very nice bucks come in and confront the decoy, all puffed up, walking sideways, ears laid back, etc.  Very cool.  One even hooked horns with it.  All this at 10 yards and on video.  Very exciting.  Like you, I just couldn't drop the string although I really wanted to.  I'd say these two would've grossed 130.  It's been crazy for the last week and you just gotta believe next week is going to be even better.

Boy do I wish I could be out this week. Spent almost all last weekend out, all day Sat and most of Sun with out seeing a single deer. Why do we have to have this day light saving time. Before I could make it out for an hour or 2 after work. Oh well guess I will have to wait for Thanksgiving weekend. Good luck to all who can still make it out this week. Before the orange army moves in.

Eric W there's no reason to wait until Thanksgiving weekend. In case you did not know Desoto Bend is open to archery all through the rifle season. There are some excellent places to set up on the ground there. Iowa side or NE side, take your pick, it,s all Federal land. There will be quite a few trucks there , but don't get discouraged, there are plenty of places to hunt.

I had a whole story wrote and my #%*@ computer went down before I hit the add reply button. So here is the short story. Sat a stand to night about 200 yards from the interstate and grunted a small buck in. Was using the second Pearson Deadhead that Wade was so kind as to give me. Aready took a turkey with one and I really wanted a deer with one also.
Here is the view of my stand from where the deer was quartering away from me.
first half of arrow 3 yards from impact.
second half 15 yards down the trail.
and I would guess about 45 yard from stand.

The woods were absolutely nuts tonight, I stopped counting at 35 some deer and 200 turkeys- Had several small forks and spikes and basket racks come right up to the decoy but the big boys did not show themselves tonight. A lot of chasing going on, I had 3 bucks chasing a doe right by me on my way in to the stand at 11:45 today , I froze and grunted and they continued to circle around me not 20 yards grunting and chasing- really cool to watch. I passed on at least 11 viable shots, 6 bucks the rest does(don't want to shoot the live bait!) all at 12 yards or less. I have 2 more days to get it done!
Hey Eric- ya gotta get out man, self-employment does have its ups and downs but right now it's definately up! whoooo man I wish the guys had all the corn out, then it would really be good.  Good luck guys

Mooseman, I refuse to believe your story.  You know why?  Because no one can get a decent hole in an animal or a decent bloodtrail unless they are using the Rage broadhead.  An old traditional head could not do that.   :)   At least that's what every Tom-Dick-and-Harry keeps telling me.  I swear if I see another "look at the hole this Rage made" thread or picture, I'm gonna puke my guts out.  Ha.  (Sorry, Moose, I've just been waiting for an opportunity to say that.  And your great pictures/blood trail provided the perfect chance).

Anxious to get back out there in a few days, probably headed to IA this weekend where I've not done justice to the expensive tag yet.  I get the feeling that with the corn still in the fields in many parts, and the way the weather's been, that when we hit the woods again next week there could still be good bucks around and the action could still be very good.

I just have an 04 Dyna Wide Glide, 16" apes and a few other upgrades- still haven't figured out a good way to secure a bow to it though. I suppose over my shoulder would work. Theres a couple other local guys here that ride and shoot bows so we'll have to stay in touch and get out one of these days. BrokenArrow1 has a I think a 70 sportster all original but I could never ride it, damn thing shifts on the wrong side plus its far too special of a bike for me to even sit on- lots of history and cool, he also rides a 01 dyna lowrider- big apes and lots of chrome, Congoman rides too.

Hey guys, I'm more or less a lurker.
On Nov 2nd I shot my first trad deer with a 50# Martin Dream Catcher, using a 125 Snuffer. A doe at 5 yards. She not only was my first trad deer but she was my first archery kill in 9 long years. Plus, I used a bow that used to belong to my buddy's dad, who lost a battle with cancer. She was meaningful on many levels!

If I wasnt so computer challenged, I'd post a picture of her. Good job by all! Especially on that squirrel!

Congrats Maze, I once took a deer with arrows in my quiver that an uncle gave me about 8 months after he passed. Bittersweet tribute..
