Looks good! what length? Here is a few shots of a recent bow I have done Using local Australian woods  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] . Riser is Rose She oak, and " yellow wood' and belly veneers are she oak also. It is 68'' ntn, flat laid longbow and is 50# @ 28'' with pistol grip in riser.

It may be double but that is ok, it calls for a second look. That is a really nice color combination.

Nice one Bob! I like the Sheoak, forgot that it's native to you folks. Shredd scored some nice Sheoak, somewhere here in the states.

Hope your not in danger down there. I feel for you folks. I know the feeling of dread that comes with fire season.

Thanks guys. Yeah Flem, most of the country is burning. Thousands of homes ,dozens of people gone. And we are just starting our summer. Whole country is dry as tinder box. Ok where I live , closest was about 20 mile away. It' s out now. worst thing is in some places , morons are actually lighting these fires.

Mike and I built a new laminating box that we can use for a multitude of different things from kiln drying, to curing smooth-on builds.  5x200watt bulbs underneath on individual switches to give us a little better control of the heat.  I found an "inkbird itc1000" thermostat control to adjust the temps. Still have to wire that in and the fan to circulate the air, but so far it's working pretty well. Got up to 220f and held pretty good. This is a new design for me. So we'll see how it works when we're done. We Should have it finished tomorrow.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/9f0c13e416ade6ae07455a0f1ce09892.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/210b685c8a104b9cd94e5530af8c0cf1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/5baddc514a910f97f50f78ae71463077.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/9ef8f92ff6a8a4a2497af1465c2bb7b9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/2122de5d99e0e61580feabf80c8a80d8.jpg)

Good call on the muffin fan. I put one in my box some time ago and it was one of the best oven improvements, besides ditching the light bulbs for a baseboard heating element.

Post by: Pat B on January 05, 2020, 12:25:58 PM
Having a small fan not only helps with wood drying but it also helps prevents hot spots by keeping the heat more evenly distributed.
Good idea keeping all the needed equipment together in one unit. Adding rollers to the bottom will make it easy to move it to out of the way when not needed.

We went a bit tall for it to have been a good bench top after the casters, but with the foam insulation, even after an hour at full blast, the outside is still cool to the touch, so I'm sure it would work out well for a bench top.

I just figured out that my newly configured hot box storage is handy for cooking also.
My control box cord is long enough, I can jack it back up to the ceiling
Damn thing takes up a lot of floor space in a small shop.

Flem, I added casters to one end of my box(similar to yours) and when not in use I stand it on end and roll it into a corner out of the way. If I leave it horizontal it seems to collect all sorts of things on top.  :dunno:

Nice hot box. Is it okay to have such a fan inside the box, gets pretty hot in there?

Scored a nice one man lean to ladder stand for $35. It’s 14’ tall. Who all hunts out of ladder stands, and do you have any issues getting picked off by deer? I’ve already got it set up in the yard and shooting out of it. Best $35 I’ve spent!

I started working on a take down handle. I want to work on my limbs design and figured it would be faster to do a pair of limb for each design modification instead of a whole new bow each time.
It’s 17” long. Next step is to shape the templates.

Brian you want to relieve material about 3/8s under where your shelf will be. And shape the grip to where its comfortable then 1/8th smaller. so you need off center G10 for strength ibeam. Then cut into at an angle below the finger grooves. On U tube Big Jim has the videos. watch them if you want to do one.

That's nifty.  I  don't climb up trees anymore but that could be an option in some areas that require tree stands.

I hunted at 25' up.

I try to get a CWD deer every year but they always test out negative.   Any tips? :)

Last time I fell out of a treestand it was eight feet and that seemed high enough.

Working on a place in the basement to do bow lay ups so I can do more building during cold weather.

I wish it was excellent Kenny. I now have a two piece handle. I am guessing my wrapping jig got warped. I layed the bow on the table to work on the sight windowand it was springy laying on its side. WTH  So I put the tiller blocks and string on it. Both limbs leaned the same direction
. way too bad even for a dynamic adjustment :banghead: So I saved the riser part for a pattern. Will be making a new jig soon

Well got some bad news guys. Last weekend I felt something strange in my shoulder after I took a shower and pretty much undid 6 weeks of PT. Seeing the ortho surgeon for a follow up and next steps. My PT therapist cancelled my session for today. Still not sure what I wrecked but pretty much in pain 24/7. Moved from mechanic to front desk due to inability to due my job. Haven’t shot a bow in 12 weeks. Looks like 2020 may not be my year. But that sums it up as to why I kind of went radio silent for the last few months.

No Flem I switched to the desk before that. Done wrenching indefinitely at this point. We need to hire someone for my spot to keep up with work load. I’m not as bad as day one of injury but not getting any better. Anti inflammatory prescription they gave doesn’t touch the pain and the cortisone shoot did nothing either. Thanks for asking.

Well got some bad news guys.....

Dang, that sucks! Hope you can get it sorted!!

Finally managed to get home after 8 days or so away. We left last week due to extreme fire weather and have been between a friends house and parents house as weather and danger threatened. We returned one day only to get another emergency warning so packed the car (1/2hr after unpacking) and buggered off again. I would have headed bush yesterday for a few hours, but figured it wasn't very responsible being somewhere out of contact and if a fire started I would have been in serious trouble so went fishing instead. Plus, I cached my hunting bow at work in case the worst happened at home.

It was thicker than this at one stage, and those trees down the back fence are 70m/200' away  :o

Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?

Yeah it is not that hard to do. Need a pressure pot and compressor. The big cost is the resin. And I think they charge by the oz. of weight gain of the wood.

This past weekend I layed down all templates I will need for the take down handle.
Made a couple strings. While doing this, I was trying to find a way to easily cut the added material for the loops. And ended up just adding an extra nail on the right end. Pretty easy, I should have thought about this before  :knothead:

OK you guys are going to think I'm goofy(if you did not already), but I have a Woodpecker and Flicker problem. They are turning my siding into splinters! So I came up with this solution, I don't want to kill them, just scare the crap out of them. But in the process I discovered an excellent training tool. The motions involved are almost exactly like shooting a long or self bow. I'm thinking I will be out plinking to keep my shoulders in shape. Would be an excellent rehab or PT exercise with weaker bands.

I've had one hanging on the wall for a couple months now.   Really need get it set up.

At least once a day I pick up a recurve form template that I made months ago.  Pick it up, look at it, touch it here and there with a sanding block and try to convince myself it's good to go.

I vote install it.  Took about 20 minutes to move the guides, find the tension setting, and reset the guides.

As for that form, toss something on there and see how it comes out!  I swear the longer I run my hand across the form the more invisible bumps appear...

Done some more sanding on the bow and just finished wiping EA-40 and acetone mix on the handle. First time I try this technique. Will see how it comes out.

Well this morning it was still tacky. Like a lot.
So now I am wondering if it was a good idea ???
Will see tonight
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: kennym on January 24, 2020, 11:59:22 AM
I just did one too, it was tacky next morning  but ea 40 takes 24 hours to set and my shop was 58 degrees ...it dried by the next day and steel wool seemed to work well on it.

Mike, it doesn’t mix very well and I may go 2/3 acetone next time so it’s thinner.

Thanks Kenny
I should know tonight then.

Do you usually wipe it on or spray it ?

I put it on with a foam brush this time, didn't work too bad. Wiping might be better tho as I left a couple thick spots...

there is 20 min. finishing epoxy and the 3 hour is what I have mixed 50/50 acetone dries quicker. But it seems to sand hard. But fills well.

The hobby shops sell some kind of finishing epoxy.  two component.  Not sure how thick/thin it is though.

It’s still a bit tacky tonight but it did dry up during the day. Should be good for sanding by tomorrow

What are you adding to that resin to make it black?
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on January 25, 2020, 02:36:40 PM
That black is a couple of drops of left over Aluminite dye used for stabilizing. Jim sells some powder he uses to dye his resin. I have used leather dye even a couple of drops of Rit will work.It dont take much.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: mtblucas on January 25, 2020, 06:28:59 PM
I think I’ll order some of that from Jim when I start making takedowns. Do you also add the carbon like he does in his video or do you only use fiberglass?
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on January 25, 2020, 08:13:16 PM
I think you would be fine without carbon. But I use it. I do two wraps of glass then the carbon. Then when you are shaping and get down to seeing carbon you know where to stop. And its gonna be stronger to.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: mtblucas on January 25, 2020, 09:33:54 PM
I guess I’ll order some carbon from Jim as well then. Probably don’t need it but I like overbuilding stuff.

Have you had issues with structural integrity of the resin using non-resin specific dyes? I tried casting resin lures with pigments and ran into issues using other dyes.

Roughed out an osage stave that I've had sitting around for a while. It's well aged even before I got it so it's completely moisture stable, though it does have quite a few cracks in the back at the moment. Whether I can get below/around them and still have enough wood to work with only time (and skill or lack thereof) will tell. I'll have to steam it to get the tips into something like alignment so I may have go at doing a full recurve at the same time. A possibly interesting side note is that our borers here don't seem to attack the heartwood, though they will make mince meat of the sapwood.

Also managed to sneak a couple of lengths of some local bloodwood (accacia species) for a try as a selfbow from some roadside vegetation clearing. I've heard goodish things of it, so hopefully something will come out. Has much lighter sapwood and dark heartwoos much like osage. One should be good for a couple of staves, but the other will probably be only good for a sapling type bow.

Finally got my A into G and cleared up my workbench. I had to stop only because I was worried about the garbage truck not being able to lift the bin

Steve the Aluminite dye is used for casting and stabilizing. It takes such a small amount to. I have had no troubles so far.

You can mix a variety of pigments into epoxy without issue. But you have to be careful of the amount added and the carrier the pigment is dispersed in. It's recommended to not exceed 3% of the total resin weight. I have used UTC's, powdered earth pigments, Transtint dyes and specific colorants for epoxy.
No problems.

Are using it as wood filler or for your TD sleeve?
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?

Looking at the checks in your stave they don't seen to run off the edge of the stave so they shouldn't be a problem, only a cosmetic situation. Fill them with super glue and continue on. Reduce the stave to floor tiller stage then do your heat corrections first before adding the super glue.I don't think trying to make all the heat corrections and recurving at one time is a good idea. I would first get the stave as straight as you want it then add the recurves so they line up with the bow. Also, it's obvious that the stave is seasoned but is it dry enough to build a bow. I know Australia is in a drought but depending on where in Oz you are it may not be bow building dry. What is the R/H there?
On the other staves, seeing the deep checks in the end of the stave and the discoloration I'm wondering just how sound they are. It may not be an issue in Oz but here in the US, especially in the Eastern half any wood that has been on the ground that long would, IMO be worthless as a viable bow wood.
I don't know how close you are to the fires and I hope you are not close and are safe, fire killed/hardened wood could be an option for viable bow wood if you have access to it.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on January 26, 2020, 12:58:22 PM
Sam it is a 50/50 mix so just for wood filler. The sleeve resin is 2 resin and 1 hardener. I think Jims stuff is 3/1

There you go, I must have gone over some magic number to have issues!

That check I went through was what looked the deepest/worst and I only took half a dozen rings off, so I should be good to get below it. I did think about leaving the worst in, but they'd be full of dirt and gunk, so I don't know how well the CA would hold up. It had been down so long the sapwood and bark had completely rotted off. RH? Dunno, but it won't be high -  the osage has been stored inside in relatively stable temps/RH for a few years now.

That was the plan with steaming, get it straight first then worry about putting in some bend at the tips. So far it looks like I'll be bending in different places to straighten and recurve the tips so hopefully not re-heating the same area!

Those staves have been down for a matter of a week or two as I drove past them every day on my way to work, the mid-trunk cut I made is sound so I suspect I just need to lop a bit off the original cut and seal well.

As for fires, we're within site (maybe 15km/10 miles?) of the fire front. We had a months worth of rain last week so they've been knocked on the head for the moment but we still have 6 weeks of possible 40C/100F plus days so it will be going until the depths of winter. As for standing timber, I'm aware of only one species that is truly viable locally and it grows in the wetter gullies so may have escaped. Plus, some bloke going around knocking over trees in a national park will no doubt be frowned upon  :biglaugh: I do have my eye open for any that end up coming down though.....

Glued up a bow with some apple veneers. Aired it up really slow, 10 pounds at a time because I worried they might split but the they still did. Oh well, minor cosmetic flaw.

Travis, I have a split limb osage bow. It is prob 10 years old and still good. The splits are a lot bigger than the ones you have there! I didn't know the veneers were gonna split and aired it right on up.LOL

That bow looks to have a pretty good hook on it!! Bet she will be quick!!

Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: 4 point on January 28, 2020, 09:55:30 AM
Flem, it does check like crazy. I lost a small knot out of them when I ground them. In my experience it's really easy to split veneers when they have a missing knot or a small crack. I think the hydraulic pressure forces them apart. That's why I went slow airing it up. Tried to let the glue work out slowly.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, feels good to be back in the game again.  Shout out to Kenny for producing top notch materials!

In other news, I added a new level to "scariest thing I have ever done to a bow" today by tapering the limbs with a table saw :biglaugh:

Almost done with this one. Apparently I was too much in a hurry to apply the last coats of finish and had a few run-out on the limb.
Got to do some more sanding before final coat.
Part of the learning curve I guess !

Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: EvilDogBeast on February 05, 2020, 06:31:34 PM
Funny you should mention that Mark.  My stringer seems to be MIA after the move so I had to use the 'ole shin/thigh method and was barely able to get it to a 5" low brace   All of my tillering strings are too long to get it to full brace so I have to wait for one in the mail before finding true weight.

Initial results:

- 0.360" with Bearpaw clear makes 57.83# @ 28" on the new form (preliminary, expect 62-ish at full brace)
- 0.360" on old form (1" deflex and 1" reflex less than new) put out 63# @ 28" full brace with Gordons clear
- 6 lams between the glass is good for no springback, but in reality that only saved me 1/32" so it's not really worth the added layup effort

More to come once that string arrives.

You need to consider the change in draw weight when changing the limb length, since you already shortened the riser length it will be interesting how that also affects the targeted draw weight.

You can post pictures directly through the website as long as they aren't over a certain size, although I'm not sure what the limit is (1-2 MB?).  Here are the steps:

I resize them from my phone by sending the picture to my wife on FB messenger and then saving what I just sent her since the app automatically resizes them.  Alternatively, you could put them on your computer and then resize them in Paint or something.

There's an app that I use to resize the phone photos which are typically 3 to  4 megabytes.   Here's a screenshot of the working screen which also shows you the name of the app.  This screenshot was itself resized.   Once you resize the resized photos automatically go into their own folder and the original stays on the camera roll in it's original size.

You are right and I keep my fingers crossed and hope that it fits just right when I glue the first riser together.

But actually it wasn’t too bad getting this set done. I made both forms by hand, used a ¼ router bit to shape the counter-forms. Then reshaped the counter-forms on my oscillating sander which has a 1/8 offset. So theoretically I am left with a 1/8 gap for the accent strips.

Mike....I had to replace that same controller twice.  The first one was on warrant .Then with the second one I had to replace the blower because it wasn't  compatible with the new   controller. So I feel your pain

Al this one is suppose to be an upgrade for my stove. Thought I was gonna need a fan to $200 more. Had that been the case I would have looked into another stove.

So Flem how much total .....????

Thats about the gist of it. One of those capacitors or switches or transformers or rheostats on that circuit board is cooked.
Find the specs and test them. PITA, but thats what you do, if you are cheap like me ;)

That's exactly why I wouldn't let myself buy one of those.  Not much can go wrong with a good old wood stove.  If it has a blower and it goes bad, a fan behind it will work in a pinch.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on February 16, 2020, 08:24:27 AM
I agree with the wood stove. But then you have to have a wood source and your insurance goes up. By the time I bought a chain saw spent time cutting wood and hauling it and money saved on insurance the $400 board might not look so bad.  :bigsmyl:

On 25-30 degree days about six hours each day a $ 4.99 bag will last me 2 days. My shop has the 16 foot garage door. Walls are well insulated but no ceiling. the soffit area is stuffed with insulation so no leaks there. It has 4 pellet feed rates on manual mode. They work like stoker furnace. Pretty amazing the amount of heat out of such small amount of fuel.

Roughed out then straightened up an osage stave. Had some deflex, prop twist and tip alignment issues which thankfully were all in separate areas so I was able to straighten it out somewhat fairly easily. Enough to get it bending and to brace height and then re-straighten if needed.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The white box behind the stave is an asthma nebuliser I've converted to a vacuum pump, so hopefully will see some sucking duties at some stage.

Went and had a look at another house, has plenty of land so I'd be able to set up a full 3D course if I could be bothered, have a lifetimes supply of firewood and possibly harvest some timber for staves/boards.

Actually Roy it was 3.75  :bigsmyl:  Rather have a good cheeseburger somedays.  :wavey:

I finished my flaire jigslast week-end. This week I used a scrap piece of walnut to try it out. The block isn’t quite thick enough for a standard riser but I can probably make my son his first glass bow with it.

Glue lines looks ok. Time to get more wood and get my swap bow started

Got my riser cut out and ground to shape today, glued tapers together a d did a couple dry runs. First run, riser needed a few minor tweaks but 2nd go it fit really good. I gotta work on that stupid lil joint glueing butt ends of tapers together. Didnt get em perfectly flat. Tried sanding a d end up with a lil dip that shows up on edge.   NOt horrible. Ut Im not in love with it. Tinkered with it a lil but was going wrong direction. It should be ok a d at worst it will be under leather grip wrap
This build is a curly maple riser with black glass.  very interested to see what it comes in at as far as weight based on the design dimensions.  Even had Kenny scratchin his head a lil bit but we took a good guess and wil go from there. Glue up in the morning.

Mark, I washed the paper with dish soap and rinsed well. Filter paper is amazingly tough and it absorbs epoxy better than any other paper I have used. The used filter paper I used previously is holding up good. I have not noticed any degradation and that was at least 3 years ago.

Hey guys,  surgery went well. I am doing quite a bit better than I thought I’d be. No tears were found. They cleaned up bone spurs and found a spur that had broke off and was floating around the joint. They did relieve my AC joint to make more room for my nerve that goes under it. Looks like I’m 6-8 weeks in PT and about 3-6 months until I’m back to 100%. Gotta find me a nice 20-30# bow for Compton in June. Then comes getting ready for GLLI in august and deer season and the hope bow in October. Got a bow project sitting in the corner that I gotta decide on a riser for.

Remember, PT (pain & torture) ain't doing any good unless it hurts!

The weather warmed up and let me get a few things done today.   Made up some blockers for the sides of this kid bow form.  And glued some lay up blockers on the ends.  This will make a 54" blank but pretty sure it's going to make a bow closer to 50".

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

This is a 1" form and using a topless hose form might not work out due to the hose width so it's going to be a rubber band form.  Instead of using a single pressure strip, it's going to be two thin ones back to back.  The idea being that they will be flexible and a bit stouter than a thicker single.   Still need a strip down the center to prevent cupping.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Double checked the fit of the little bocote riser its good.  Just need to feather the fades.  But that won't be happening cause I dropped it! :(

Now, I know walnut don't get no respect as a riser wood but it should be able to handle this little bow.  Got a start on it but the sun was going down.  More to come, of course.

The walnut has been in my wife's family for 65 years.  It was cut into rough boards in Omaha and my wife being a military brat, the wood travelled the world.  It has lived in Paris, Arizona, Sacramento, Arlington and now here in Colorado.   It oughta be dry by now. :)

I have dropped a riser on the floor too, with the same result as yours. Made me real angry with myself for being careless. Looking forward to your build.

I get the allure of expensive, exotic woods from far away places. It's like a shiny nickel at the bottom of a fountain. But that Walnut has been the object of a life time of custodianship. Thats invaluable.
I might be a little biased ;)

Maybe CA glue that piece back on the riser.

I don't think it would work.   It wasn't feathered out yet and probably would go south.

I am making two of these but got a nice piece of Zebra from Kenny that will be fun to play with.

If this form doesn't toss me a good bow, I have two other forms standing by.  :)

You guys made such sense on the super glue suggestion that I had to give it a try.   Glued it together and it's going to cure overnight. I'll give it a go on the rigid and see what happens.

Looks pretty good.

Actually worked on the victim bow. Got the limbs and riser drilled inserts in and out of pins. Fastenal was closed.
So I done this.

Yes, I use a program called Cad Std.  When I got it it it was a free version and there was also an upgrade version.  The free one was completely adequate but eventually I got the upgrade solely to be able to do offsets.   Which I I rarely use but it can be handy.

Sometimes I wish I had a 8 inch wide beltsander, but since I do not I use this, works very well. I like to have one side of a recurve limb dead straight before running it through a machine so the width is parallel before drilling. I cut a 8 inch wide belt and stretch it out on my dead straight work bench.
If your finished width taper is straight from the fades, using this thing when you are nearly there will give you a slight trapping to the back.

Bue that looks like a lot of elbow grease.

Cut in the sight window and limb profile and got it in two. .002 taper bottom to top front to back and .008 bottom to top on the sides made it come apart really easy.

That cut sanding belt is an excellent idea! I have always glued down multiple 8X11 sheets of sandpaper in line, but it's not a good solution. You can end up with a lumpy or slightly uneven surface or the edges start lifting at some point. Then you have to clean off the glue residue.

Steve, I'm going to vac press it. I used to use a two sided tray and clamps, but it was not ideal. The vacuum is awesome. Not only does it press the crap out of it, but it eliminates any air voids.

Bue, I use this System Three Clear Coat. It's low viscosity, I think it's 400-600 CPS. It wets out the paper or fabric real fast and it has a long pot life.

I was going to do this today and document it, but a steering rack said no way dude.
I think after I get done crawling around under my car I'm going to relax and watch "The Omega Man"  :goldtooth:

There is many words in English that I do not know the meaning of.
When you say that an epoxy have a low viscosity, does that mean it is thin or easy to spread so a brush can be used?
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: monterey on March 15, 2020, 12:14:21 PM
Means it's thinner but doesn't define it by any particular scale.

Always thought your English was pretty good.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Flem on March 15, 2020, 12:32:37 PM
Most epoxy manufactures use a "centipiose" or CPS scale to measure viscosity or how a material will flow.
For reference, water has a CPS of 1, motor oil would be in the range of 200-500 CPS, EA-40 would be 100,000+CPS!!!
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Shredd on March 15, 2020, 02:45:42 PM
Bue just replace the word viscosity with thick or thickness...   So another wards high viscosity would be very thick as in honey and low viscosity would be less thick as in water...

Think I better you speak English than me...

the state of being thick, sticky, and semifluid in consistency, due to internal friction.
"cooling the fluid raises its viscosity"
a quantity expressing the magnitude of internal friction, as measured by the force per unit area resisting a flow in which parallel layers unit distance apart have unit speed relative to one another.
plural noun: viscosities
"silicone oils can be obtained with different viscosities"

Tried out a new epoxy today, its System Three's G2. I glued up several thin pieces of walnut similar to spectraply for the first time. So far I really like it we'll see how it holds. It reminds me of the epoxies I used back in the 1980s for building bows.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the G-2. This is what I was using back in the day before System Three bought Industrial Formulators and discontinued it....

I forgot that I had these little samples to try before I had started using the stuff. These have to be 30yrs old and guess what's, it's still good! The resin had crystalized a little, but after a short time in a warm water bath it was good to go. Wish I had more of it.

With a little bit of extra time on my hands I decided to get the extra insulation down in the ceiling of my shop.  I have had the materials here since November but when I had time the weather was bad. Well the shop is only 16x 9, an old garage that I could not put the car in and open the door. So I took the over head door out several years ago and framed it in to accommodate a 40" swing out door I made. Put 4 inches of insulation in the rafters and covered with OSB so I could still have storage up there. Insulated the walls and boarded it with OSB. Small in wall gas furnace keeps it warm but not enough insulation in attic, snow melts and freezes on roof causing ice dams.
Well so everything stored in the attic was taken out to the driveway, 2x6s nailed in, 6 more inches of insulation placed down and 7/16 OSB placed over the top. Can't hardly crawl though to nail it down, getting awful small up there. That was 2 days ago, I'm starting to be able to move without hurting to much today. Getting old ain't for sissies!!!!! :)

Worked on my latest Osage selfbow, 69" and hoping for 50+ @ 28" so I'm legal for deer. So far it's 45 @23 with a couple of whoopsies to work out so hopefully should come in on target. I had to do a little straightening and de-propping with dry heat which leaves it with a little deflex in one limb, and reflex in the other. The left limb is bottom with a slight reflex in the last 1/4 of the limb, and the right has a slight deflex about halfway out.

Leave the center 1/3 alone and get both mid limbs working. That will relieve the over binding in the handle area a bit...and don't bend it that far again until you correct the problem.
Are you exercising the limbs after each wood removal?

I’m off work for two weeks. I had a sore throat so now I have to be isolated. Lots of time to catch up on projects around the house.
Today I was working on a flip cart that will hold two belt sanders and organize the belts and other bits. This is part of my longer term project to clean up and organize my small shop.

Bocote back / osage belly

See why I don't throw thin lam blanks out?

I got some stable maple for my next riser. I had 1/2 gallon of green and half a gallon of black left over so I mixed them. The result is pretty close to Bear green futherwood. And a pretty nice scarf joint.

Since I was told to stay home for two weeks after getting a cold, I had time to start catching up on things I wanted to do. Today I finished helping my Dad to change out the worn out hinges in the kitchen. ( pita ) 😊
Then I was able to get some work done on on of my projects.

My new sanding station.  It’s 90% done. I’m just waiting on some toggle clamps to be delivered for it. And it needs a bit of tweaking.

Just cooked this little pink bow.  Pulling the tape was a little nerve wracking.  When the lay up was finished, there lay one of the pressure strips.  :scared:  so, cut that end loose and put the strip in and wrapped it up again!  Luckily all was well except for a little bit of squiggle at  mid limb.  I was a little nervous about using the topless hose on such a narrow layup so it was done with rubber bands.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I used Jess Stuart's split lam method to get 1" cores.  Glass is 1.5" Bear Paw cut to one inch wide.  Got most of the boogers off so now to figure a limb profile.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Maple core, pink lams and bocote riser from a piece found on the floor.

btw, this is the riser that i posted recently that was dropped on the floor and chipped.  You all suggested super glue and it worked.   Survived the feathering process  nicely.

Here's a little experiment with this layup.   The veneers are so thin that scarf joints didn't work.   So i put a patch across it made of onion skin paper  .002 thick and super glued it.   I could've turned it to the inside but wanted to see what it looks like.   Overlay should hide it.

That's dyed Koto wood.  Only .019".  Very delicate.   I can get it thicker but not in the pink.  Gotta be pink for a granddaughter.   The thicker stuff is Swiss Sycamore.

I get it from here.   https://www.dyed-veneer.com/Products-s/136.htm

Looking nice Monterey.
Well done with the onion skin paper. I already thought of doing something like that. Was thinking about using mesh to allow the epoxy to go through more easily. But never thought of using paper.

Thanks

The paper is delicate.   Would like to come up with another solution.   I did the same thing to the cores on the back even though they are .060.

So did the smooth on saturate the onion paper??

I can't say for certain.   The SG did saturate the paper.  I'm thinking that by keeping the paper narrow it won't be a structurally significant point.   In addition, it hopefully will come in about 20#  at 24 to 26 inches.

Put the final touches on the granddaughters bow.  I'm pretty satisfied with it although every bow tells a story of what can be done better.   I'm already working on another one for my other granddaughter.

Some pictures.  The string is a bit short and is fine for tillering but it will get a new string and some arrows.   That first picture of the nock was taken before final sanding.

Yeah Kenny. made of 3/4 plywood. 2x6 legs with two 1/4 bolts holding the top on. It has a bit of side wiggle but an angle brace would cure that. That sander box said 80 lbs. but more like 60 to me. Got rubber pads on each corner. pretty smooth running.

Are you exercising the limbs after each wood removal?

Yep, 20-40 pulls each time. Long story short there was a bit of operator mis-read which was compounded by an equipment challenge and I ended up with a couple of very mismatched limbs so I've thrown it in the corner but might pull it out at some stage and rescue it for something - can probably make a very light/kids bow if I weaken up the strong limb to match. Haven't had a good run, another equipment malfunction (read operator error) meant I ended with an overly short r/d boo backed cypress board bow which looked great until I went too far with a long string and took too much off the tips <sigh> Again, I can probably take it back to a lightish/kids bow so I threw it in the other corner until I forgive it enough to get back to it.

Soo, I started on my latest - a 66" ASL from spotted gum with boo backing (if I screw this up I've still got a 4th corner before I get back to the beginning   ). It's 1.25" straight until the last 8" tapering to 1/2" with a 12" riser and I'm planning on a straight glue up to keep it simple. This is the first fully shaped riser/handle that I've done, and I'm a little unsure how to shape out the fades to paper thin with my limited tools. Belt sander mounted on it's side and use the end roller as a kinda spindle sander?

Interesting.......  I have wondered about using Eucalyptus. It's pretty wood, really heavy!
Is it at all brittle?  For your fades, if you can get a clean cut close to the line, you can taper it without too much trouble with varying grits of sandpaper wrapped around some 2-3" PVC pipe

Flem

I can't really comment not having worked much/made a bow with it yet but I do know spotted gum has been used successfully here quite a bit both in board and stave form. I suspect it's a bit like your hickory and red oak, not the first choice but readily available and works ok. It would be interesting to see if some heat treating does anything for it. There are other eucalyptus' that have been used successfully also, but they're much harder to get hold of in general. It's unfortunate that our other widely available eucatlyp in mountain ash/tassie oak etc. makes poor bows as it's relatively easy to find in straight grained boards.

Roger on the PVC, I'm assuming you're talking about final shaping once glued up on the bow?

Only question is, will the nodes at the end of the fades create a problem when tillering?

It has a bit of a hinge in the right limb exacerbated by a twist but I'm pretty happy with it. Couldn't stop laughing at how fast it flung a little kids arrow though, she's a blood thirsty little girl, so the local mice/pest birds might be in for a fun time. It did take a bit of set, but that might have been me pushing it a bit on the tillering tree to see if it would break.

Actually, this was the first serious test of a new timber that I've not used before, a local accacia/wattle which goes by 'bloodwood' but I'll be buggered if I can find a species specific name for it (there are many other endemic 'bloodwoods' so it's not that helpful). Grows fairly straight and branch free for bow sized lengths, and I can get hold of it fairly easily. Outer sapwood is softish and peels off easily but heartwood is nice and dense and generally nice grain of the few staves I've split and de-barked so far. Only a couple of downsides: Borers love it but so far really only seem to hit the sap wood so not much of an issue, but I have noticed that my other timber seems to be sprouting a few more sawdust holes underneath so hopefully I haven't brought in a heap of bugs.... The other is that my sinuses react like crazy to it. I can do a session without mask with osage, 'boo etc. (not good I know!!) and not suffer too much but this is one wiff and my head starts to ache. The upside is that is forcing me to wear a proper mask any time I'm working with timber now, I don't want to end up with allergies later in life and I'm already halfway there (allergies, not age I hope   ). Gotta make a start on a full size selfbow now to see how it works at bigger weights as I was really impressed with how well it pulled.

Our turkey got the chop the other day too, so I kept all the wing feathers to have a crack at making my own fletchings. Dried them over the wood fire which worked well.

Kenny I have a one piece with a similar hook and a lot more working limb than the TD will have. If this works and can keep it as quite as the present limb it will be great. The only thing I hear when the string is dropped is a wisk from the feathers. And it and my Kenny bow are the two I shoot the best.

Norbert when the hooks start getting hookier  :bigsmyl: no more than.001 forward taper. and stablecore. keeps a bit more meat in the base of the hook where you need it. Now you go to getting really hooky then you need carbon to keep them straight.
Come on Kenny it will be fun   :biglaugh:

This is a bow for those that are worried about misplacing it in the field!. Had the block from Kenny couple years and never did any thing with it and as I had bit of epoxy left in the cans, I threw this together.Bow is a Kenny design deflex/reflex and is 64'' ntn and 37# @ 28'' Belly veneers are an Aussie wood called Mackay Cedar.Red glass on back.

On lunch break. I am pretty pleased with how this turned out. the visual look is smoother then I thought it would be. It did not offer to go sideways at all and needs a bit weaker bottom limb
. Shot about 6 arrows and pretty quite with the B50 build string. Will do a full draw when closer to done.

Nice profile. Looks similar to the prototype I just made.  50s style that works on my standard longbow riser, so they are interchangeable. It has a limb pad angle of 10 degrees.  Mine is 62" though.

Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on May 12, 2020, 05:29:11 PM
That is nice Norbert.

My limb width is 1.625 at the butts and tapers the last 10 in. to about 11/16s at the string groove. Put the stick in it a little bit ago. It is 29 there. For a longer draw prolly need a bit more angle on the pads.

Post by: Crooked Stic on May 13, 2020, 07:52:18 PM
the draw feels about the same. this will be fine for my draw length. for more than 29 might need a 62 in bow. Gonna put a little longer wedge in the next set.Straight taper a working wedge. the base coats revealed parts that took more dye than others===== interesting.

Okay here is the plan. Kenny made me a sled .001 with the built in PL only. I done some measuring. For the length I need I can cut the lam to length from the small end and that gives me 4 in. past the wedge of PL. This will move the bend away from the fade and hopefully load the limb more at full draw. Most times I would not worry with it. But right now its a bit hard off the fades at 29 and want to be at least 30 if needed. For my full draw of 26 on a good day  :bigsmyl: it is fine tho.

Well, today I worked happily in the shop til about 2 and was kinda caught up so I serviced my work truck, a Dodge with a Cummins.  For awhile, I wouldn't have gave $20 for a truck load of em… Whoever placed that fuel filter where it's at with the removal method they use was a sadist.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on May 16, 2020, 07:41:38 PM
Kenny that Cummins will way outlast that Dodge. I worked on Cummins high horsepower 43 years. And built a few Bs along the way. They do have a kit for that fuel filter that puts it right up top where it is easy to get to. Be cheaper after market and not from Cummins.

Put the finish on the second granddaughter bow.  Decided not to stain the maple riser and do kinda like the look.  The form for these little bows was a reduction of the full size form template for the full size bow.  Just did a percentage reduction in cad .  Simple as that.  Here's a picture of a full size and the little bow together.  Big bow is 60" and the little is 50".

No, I kinda swagged based on suggestions from Jess Stuart.   These could've had a little thicker stack but better light than heavy.  Also would benefit from less thickness taper.  This totals. 004 which I went with due to maintaining the width well out the limb.  These two girls will out grow these pretty quickly so they will be due for something off the full size form.

I was a little bit surprised at how well worked.   If you look carefully you can see that the little bow is reflexed a bit more.   That's because the thin limbs had almost zero spring back off the form.

Okay took a vdo. while ago. Just remember on  good day I draw 26 in. Right at the end I pull it maybe 27. But it has a lot left in it. This one has tip wedges but not so sure it would need it them.

Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: monterey on July 12, 2020, 01:18:43 PM
I think the tip wedges are fine but there is possibly more tip length than needed.  You could easily cut an inch off each end I think.  The way it looks at full draw it seems like as it is there is probably another four or five inches of draw left in it.
Title: Re: 2020---->What did ya do today?
Post by: Crooked Stic on July 12, 2020, 02:25:34 PM
Exactly Mike. for my short draw I could do that. I can also make the straight taper wedge longer to get less working limb for a shorter draw. Still in the proto stage.

It' makes it hard to guess stack. I have a crude spine tester on my glass cut table. Judging from the Gordon's marks I put on for reference, the BP  .040  x  1.5  right now is about like .043 in Gordons so that would be like adding .006 to your stack if using Gordon's for reference???

Buuuutt... this roll is about gone so what will the next be?

I'm confused. you must mean higher epoxy to fiber ratio, or an epoxy rich lam with less glass?  Seems that less glass would make a bow weaker, not stiffer, yet you are saying the reduction in mass increases performance?

Has this been discussed in more depth somewhere? I would like to understand better whats going on.
Thanks

When you get old a feeble you have to improvise. My camper battery was shot, in most cases you don't need one as I am always hooked up to power from my truck or at the campground.

It still bugged me that it was so weak so I decided to change it out. Now, with bad body parts I can no longer pick up a heavy battery up so I had to improvise a way to get it out of its awkward compartment.

I rigged up my deer dragamatic 2000 (my deer mover invention) to loop the mule tape over a gas line in the compartment, hooked to the battery and pulled it out of the battery box with my cordless drill. Next I put a ramp under the battery and slid it out of the compartment on the ramp.

I used a hand truck and 4 wheeler ramp to get it into the bed of my truck.

I reversed the procedure and put the new battery back in the compartment. I never picked up the battery during this swap out.

That's a looker Bob...

Not to be negative...  But you can keep them boxes...  I just use an electric blanket now and never looked back...   I bring it up to 110 to 120 degrees which is plenty to cure epoxy...  Fold it up and takes very little space...  I use the hot box as a kiln now...

Today longcruise layed up his very first bow. :)

You've got that laid out like a pro.

Did ya watch a YouTube video or something?

I been looking at all the pitchers you guys post here.  Some Monterey guy had some that I used as a bad example which was a big help!  :)

What ya got there, LongMike? Looks like Cherry from here.
I love that you do all your layups outside  I would be afraid of skeeters in the ointment.
Speaking of Skeeter, where are you?

It's an ASL 68" with some reflex in an arc.  Green back and gray belly with charcoal spectra ply riser.  No cherry,  just good ol maple cores. This one gave me a scare cause my topless set up busted a peg just under the riser.  The cord is wrapped over itself so many times that for the most part it still held but pressure fell to 25# at about hour #2 or so.  I aired it back up and waited it out.   All is good! :) Tip overlays curing now.  I'll do a few pics when it's looking like a bow.

No skeeters but i start my lay ups early before it gets too hot.  Hit 99 yesterday bit was about 70 during this project.   I  do almost everything outside cause my inside is a 5 X 10 alcove in the garage! :)

I'm in Colorado a ways NW of Denver.  We are a pocket of sanity between Denver and Boulder.  :)

There is some nice country around you, Mike. Lots of recreating folks too!
Been there a couple of times to play in Eldorado canyon and drink beer in Boulder. Don't think I have ever been in a town with so many brew pubs :bigsmyl:

That Maple looks dark in the pic. Makes an awesome ASL

I am still suffering the after math projects of a move that turned... cantankerous shall we say  :banghead:. One project after another and none of them the ones I would like to be doing. I have a boat load of veneers I have cut just waiting to be used, just no time for them right now.

But I am now in a 30x50 shop on 7 acres, so once I get to building I have lots of room to bury arrows for my mower to find.

Yeah, the recreating is amped way up during the pandemic.  Then there's a whole lot of people who got nowhere to go but are tucked away in out of the way  places in the mountains.  There's a 14 day max per location in the NF but they seem to be leaving them alone.

It’s pretty similar in design to crooked stick and crittergetters jigs. Only difference is mine is a two pin and one bolt design. That way doesn’t matter which direction limbs or riser are facing.

Block is the same length as the limb pads and same thickness of material(1.70” for 1.75” material after initial sanding). Block will be bolted to the piece of granite, so riser and limbs can be clamped to it. I have two sets of drill guide inserts. One set for riser and one set for limbs.

Hope that helps. You’ll have to wait til I get the rest of my material for more pics.

Here is the thing on these bows. They are wood. Unless you have a mill or CNC you are not going to get thickness perfect everytime, So you need that block mounted on a machined plate or the granite will work to by clamping it. To keep the same side down when drilling you need to be able to drill from each side of the block. This keeps one as straight as possible. Then if your thickness is not perfect all the uneveness is on one side. sand the other side parallel with the straight side. And there you have it and most times be good to go.

The block is bolted to the granite.

I went with the bolt centered between two pins so that I am always drilling thru the jig the same direction and don’t have to flip the riser over.

That’s what I intend to do. You pretty much have to with this design, or you would be putting the hold down clamps directly On the fiberglass.

But I will probably also put wood overlays on both the back and belly side of the limb pads prior to drilling.

Shredd your finish looks good. But I got ask about the groove in the shelf what the purpose? And do you not think that weakens that area.

I had not had a problem yet...   Most of my bows are under 50#...  The slot allows you to shoot vanes and it is a lot easier than sanding that corner...

ztonz....   here is a pic of that design...  your standard r/d bow...  i don't post pics of the whole bow any more because most have seen it and it's nothing new...

bue...  i thought it was purple and my girl at the time said it was not...  so after a little discussion she said look, this is purple and she showed me a sample of the color...  she was right...   :biglaugh:  so i called this color wine...

excuse my penmanship...  my computer got issues and my capitols don't work so well...

One thing I’ve noticed. After I assemble the bow....the first time I draw it back I hear a click, then it is good from there on out. Is this common?

I put a rubber/fiber gasket between riser and limbs and put wax on pins.

Cut the other on on a angle to make it longer.

I finished a maple longbow backed with hickory.  I have been wanting to do some 1/8" hickory backed bows for a while, but I didn't have a saw that was powerful or precise enough to cut the slats from lumber until recently.  This bow is 66" long and 50#@27" with about an inch of reflex left after tillering and shooting it a couple hundred arrows.  The string is 14 strands of 452X and the overlays and handle are che chen.

I agree with you completely......this was an experiment at best because I almost never cut an arrow shelf into wooden bows.  I got a wild hair on this one.  I did ponder radiusing the shelf as your diagram shows, but that tropical wood is CRAZY HARD and I was afraid I’d mess up the maple so I left it with the radius it had.  Seems to shoot really well.

Thanks

Matt

Flnt VERY Nice eliptical tiller and bend at full draw!

How much backset did you start out with for it to hold an inch after it was shot in?

I typically start with 3” of glued in reflex when I apply my normal bamboo backing.  The boo backed bows lose maybe 1/2” to spring back, but the hickory lost a full inch so the bow started with 2” of reflex before I started tillering.

Finished off an ash longbow a few weeks ago. Was a bit of a trial as I've not used it before - after osage and the local hardwoods, it felt as soft as butter. Took a bit of heat treating to align everything and get rid of some of the natural string follow. Has taken a heap of set despite some heat treating, but next time I'll go wider and trap the back a little to reduce it some.

I initially thought the right limb in the braced/full draw pics would be the bottom as it's a hair stiffer, but it feels a little better in the hand as the top limb. Not much hand shock, so now I need to add an arrow pass and a handle wrap. Finished with beeswax, which made the toasty wood darken up nicely. It didn't take me long to get confident with it and would be happy shooting it out to hunting distances with a 550gr (~9gpp) arrow. Fast she ain't, but it is whisper quiet - with a leather side-plate I reckon a bees fart would be louder.

Thanks Flem, it took me a bit to work out how to tiller it, as this is the first bendy handle I've done. I went with just slightly stiff tips so I guess it's really very slightly elliptical.

Great tiller on a nice ash bow. Ash is one of those bow woods I don't have luck with. Everyone I've made fretted but I never heat treated an ash bow either. Well done on this ash bow.   :notworthy:

Thanks Pat, so far no fretting after a couple of hundred shots..... I was a little afraid it would and found a few little marks when tillering but discovered it was actually my scraper that was making the marks - with a file/rasp they disappeared and never came back

Nice work Flyonline!

Thanks, this is the first bow I'm happy with the tiller.

Flyonline
How wide is it?

Thanks Mark, it's a tickle over 1.25" wide x .75" at the handle tapering straight to 5/8 x .5 at the tips. I plan on doing something like a pyramid next time, nice 'n' wide

Guess that depends on which part of the ellipse you are looking at :saywhat:

Back when I built mine, the lathe didn’t solve it cause I had issue aligning the cylinder on the frame. What worked for me was to lay sand paper on the bottom board and rectify the cylinder in his final position on the frame

Yeah, a true cylinder is only one part of the alignment. I am going to have to shim the bottom board a touch to get it perfect with the drum surface, but that isn't too major of a problem.

Those are wicked hooks on your new limbs, I look forward to seeing how it all looks and bends when complete.

How long is that bow going to be Z  ?

Well, my initial plan was to do a 60”. But I noticed last night that I screwed up the wedges length/position. So my current plan is to build it as a 64”, run some test and then drill holes to make 60”.
It’s part of prototyping. No mistake. All part of the learning curve

Hey Max how many inch past the hook did you cut your nocks? 2”?

1-1/2", I think longer could be better

I want to see the string angle at full draw, looks like your limb is short, it might make it open up NICE
