Title: Anyone every hunt WMU 4J which is bow only?
Post by: PeteA on September 23, 2016, 02:50:00 PM
Anyone ever hunt this area. I was thinking of setting up a weekend hunting and camping trip in this area. Is there any public camping areas near by?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Pete, I hunt 4J almost exclusively.  I hunt the Albany Pine Bush.  A lot of hunters but a lot of deer as well.

Lots of Ticks in there.... I am sure I can find you a place to camp within 15 minutes. let me do some research..

Hey Charlie, that would be great! I'm looking to expand out of Westchester a bit this season.

The trick to the pine bush is to pattern the hunters.  Find an area with a lot of deer sign and where you can only see about 10-20 yards.

You will find a lot of deer sign but that isnt enough.  Often midweek and mid day are best.

The problem with the pine bush is that its always changing.  I went to my old faithful spot last year to find it was gone. I spent the whole season trying to get away from people.  All the spots I scouted previously were gone.  It always best to find places that are far enough apart that if they decided to control burn one area, you will have another.

I have opportunities at deer every year and I know people with Trad gear who kill 2-3 deer there every year.

I'm not finding any close Campgrounds that are less than 30 minutes.

You may have to meet someone who will let you camp on their property.

Pete,

Before I used permithryn, I used to have thousands of ticks from in there, every 5 or 10 steps you would pick off a  minimum of a  dozen.  After I started spraying my clothes, I have not brought home a  single tick in 3 years.

After Rifle season starts, you will find the place empties out pretty good.  all you have left are the die hard bowhunters and convicted fellons who cannot gun hunt.

I personally feel the hunting gets better in there in November anyhow.  the pressured deer find new patterns. I always said in season scouting was best in there.  I still believe its true.  Deer's summer patterns change after hunters start.

I know I haven't done a  lot to help sell the pine bush but, it is an exceptional place(s) to hunt.

Hey Charlie, thanks again very much. It's a 2 hour drive for me. Might give it a shot later in the season. Keep me posted with how your season is going. I'll be hunting with WAISIAH next weekend.
Should be a good time.

Tell Mikey I say hello.

I will certainly keep you posted.  Last year there was a "what did you see today" thread.  perhaps we will start another for the 2016 NY bowhunters.
