Title: Saying goodbye for ahwile
Post by: Tom on January 19, 2016, 06:24:00 AM
What I thought were bad knees turned into something entirely different. Will be getting both hips replaced this year. No ligaments left and malformed ball joints from an active life will leave me out of the game this year. Will enjoy reading of others exploits here-3d's,bowfishing,etc. while recuperating. Probably do some refinishing of old bows just to keep my hands and mind somewhat occupied. Will have a walker for while and then onto canes, one hip at a time so will be out for some time. But I will come back stronger and hopefully will be able to walk like I used to or at least better than the last few years. So don't count me out as I will be lurking and following y'all. Take care and have a great year ahead.

Tom good luck with the replacements.  Hope they get you back to playing bows and arrows in as little time as possible.  Shooting pink skunks is hard on the hips and knees:

Take care my friend.  Jeff

Tom, are you having the new(er) anterior hip replacement procedure, or the older lateral procedure.   I just had a patient have the new procedure and I was truly impressed.  Much less soft tissue damage/trauma, and she was walking well two weeks after surgery.  Either way, please ensure the surgeon fills out your 100,000 mile , or 10 year warranty card (whichever comes first).

Also know Jennifer and I wish you all the best on a quick, uneventful recovery.  GOD Bless.

Best of luck to you Tom.  Follow the orders of the educators, doctors, etc. and you'll be good to go in no time.
I pray for your quick recovery and many pain-free years of "play time".
Keep in touch!

Got the word today, going to get #1 3/08/16. No warranty but Doc said he is giving me the best implant suited to "active" lifestyle. 4 weeks at home,3-4 weeks of limited duty at work and then evaluated for the second one-probably at end of July. Might be healed enough to go out late season. Crossing the fingers anyway. Thanks for the well wishes and prayers. Will be following your exploits while house bound. Best to all.

Tom maybe you will get lucky, a friend from church had one done last fall and he was playing golf a week later. Good luck.

Wishing you the best.

FYI:  https://www.hipreplacement.com/about/about_surgery/anterior_surgery

Anterior hip replacement is a technique that can be used to achieve the same results as a traditional hip replacement procedure – to replace the worn ends of the bones in the hip joint. Among other things, the difference with the anterior approach is how the surgeon opens the body to reach the hip joint.

Back home now and although moving slowly with the aid of a walker overall doing well. Believe that doing pre operative exercises helped with not getting stiff muscles after the operation. Not going to set any land speed records but will get through this. Thanks to all for the well wishes and prayers, will keep you updated with my progress.

Thanks Nook and other guys. Really can't drive until the "medicine" is out of my system and the walker would be a pain to try to walk the woods with. But maybe in a month or so will be able to cane it with y'all.

Walked a mile w/walker today and although tired this evening feel really good. Tomorrow is lesson with the cane and will be sooo glad to be rid of the walker. Have taken several drives and shot at the club several times-sitting down-in the indoor range. Just really fine getting out, not much for sitting on my butt. Gee by the time I feel really good it will time to get the other one done but will be well worth it. Thanks for the well wishes and encouragement from you guys.

Thanks for the invite Jeff, working with a cane now and the operated leg is pain free in the knee area but the right leg is still nagging some-weird to have one straight leg and the other points outward-hopefully when the next hip gets done will have both pointing in the same direction, lol. Am planning on going to STAR, don't know how the walking will be then but aim to show up and visit at least for awhile.

HIHO HIHO its back to the hospital I go on June 14 to get my new right hip. If it comes out as well as the left did I will be one happy camper. Will be going to STAR although not doing much walking around, will have a table of stuff (bows, arrows,LW treestand, etc) to sell and look forward to visiting with y'all.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, this one has knocked my butt in the dirt as far as energy level goes. Home now and guess I will listen to the old body and sleep alot and walk with aids when it cools down in evening. Good seeing you at STAR and hope to run the hills next year.
