Title: 2013 Virginia Hunting Stories
Post by: Nook on February 11, 2013, 09:46:00 AM
Thought I would get this years thread started.  Notice I didn't specify Harvest thread...

The Cool Springs Gang had their annual bunny hunt this last Sat. 2-9-13.  In attendance were Bill Weigold, Danny Meadows, Greg Sz., Cid Owens and myself. Plus, two dog handlers and three beagles.  We had a lot of people cancel out.  I know of four shots being taken.  No rabbits.  I don't think we were there to build up our food supply.  We did have a great day afield.  Many stumps were shot.  If any of the participants took some pictures please post.  I neglected to take any.

I had the first shot and it was "a could a been" but aren't they all.I enjoyed the outing as usual but I did manage a shot before I had to leave half way through the day.Nook,I didn't snap any pics either, thats a first for our group.
Still glad we always make it an annual event, just gotta find more bunnies. The exercise was much needed just the same...

I was still hunting deer in Chesapeake last week (urban archery season is a great thing) and managed to call in and harvest a gox that was roaming around right before dark. He came out of a briar thicket about 70 yards ahead of me so I knelt down behind some cover anf started lip squeking, I ended up shooting him at three yards and yesterday I did the same thing with a lep squeked in a raccoon and was able to harvest him aswell, Ill post pics as soon as possible. Needless to say Ive got two pelts to practice brain tanning with!

Wow, not much to report for my opener.  Felt like I was at a resort.  Got a Sauna bath on Sat. and a Shower on Monday.  Very few acorns in this neck of the woods.  Going to be a interesting year.  Back in the woods on Friday.  Should be a little cooler.  :archer:

I must report my Cool Springs Brother - Travis Lillard put a lighted nock Silver flame missle into a Antlerless deer. Ahh... "His definition"  No pictures were allowed.  I told him he could he could hold it arms stretched out in front of him.  No deal....  Well we have camp meat for next weeks Cool Springs Bear/Deer hunt in Madison.  I think any traditional harvest is a trophy.  Tasty too...  Kinda like veal...  Milk fed....

I went out Tues evening, saw a dozen from the same stand I killed the 8 pt.

I moved to another stand tonight-with lots of grass, honeysuckle, and Catalpa trees. I had a doe and button buck at 20 yards-the wind swirled and ended that.    :wavey:

Been kind of quiet on here...

Congrats Travis!

Hi Everyone,

I'm pretty delayed in posting this.  I shot this one at last light on opening day a few weeks back using my home made BBO.  I used a cedar arrow topped with an Ace Standard broadhead.  The shot was about 6 yards and everything performed flawlessly.  Unfortunately I only got one picture due to a coyote harassing me while I was field dressiing.  This is my second deer with a bow.  My hunting buddy shot one about 5 minutes after I did.  I couldn't have asked for a better start to the season.

   (http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab237/cville88/photo.jpg) (http://s867.photobucket.com/user/cville88/media/photo.jpg.html)

Good luck this season.  Shoot straight and be safe.

This was my first sit of the year as I have been taking my 12 year old son about every evening, I am typically the guide these days and rarely the shooter!

60# @ 28" Bear Grizzly
29.5" Beman MFX Classics with 50gr inserts
125 grain 3 bladed muzzy

10yd shot from treestand, slightly quartering to me. watched her go down with 45 yards.

Nice kills fellas! Unfortunately I shot a buck on the 16th at 15 yards but the property we hunt on borderlines the Rapidan River and the stand I hunted in was literally less than 100 yards from the river. I shot the buck right at dark (silhouetted him) and unfortunately hit him in the shoulder and he jumped in the swelled river    :knothead:    :banghead:

I had an opportunity last night to shoot a doe at 25 yards hunting from a ground blind in the field but it was way too dark and I didn't feel like wounding another animal. I am still waiting on that good shot. Unfortunately the acorns didn't drop this year and the farmers planted soybeans so the deer are in the fields...

I am going to be persistent with the longbow even when everybody in my family is going BP. Hopefully I'll be able to get my first Trad kill soon! I'll keep you guys posted

A big congrates to Jake and Zach.

The Cool Springs Gang had our Madison hunt.  With no acorns we had a odd hunting experiance.  We mostly hunted field edges.  Again T. Lillard got the job done with a big O'l Nanny (95 lbs. dressed).  A silver flame through the carberator.  Cool Springer and I had close encounters, but no meat.  The pre rut was just starting.  A few rubs and a couple of light scrapes.

A side note:  I was playing corn hole and had 5 deer come in to the smell of corn starch.  I'm afraid we are going to have a starvation winter for the deer.  I don't know what the squirrels are going to eat.       :(

I have had a pretty decent season so far.  Hung up my longbows and have been toting some of my Bear takedowns. I have managed to shoot several does in Va.

I also went up to New Jersey and hunted with my old college room mate for a week at the end of October. Managed to get an arrow into a couple of those soy bean eating swamp deer up there.

And the biggie for me was when my daughter managed to get her first deer.

This year was a bust for me, I hunted relentlessly with the longbow all of archery and even muzzle loading season without any deer coming any closer than 50 yards. The only deer close enough was the buck I wounded back in October and lost him in the river. Hopefully this archery season (Oct 2014) will be better for me. Maybe then I'll be practiced up and maybe make a better shot.

So, the 2013-2014 big game season is over for us.

Jen had her first shot - with her new Schafer - at a turkey (which I thought was outstanding); however, no turkey and no deer.  Her season was cut short when - in mid November - she lost her balance on a wet floor and landed hard... jarring her post-surgical cervical fusion (c3-c6)... with the titanium plate and 8 screws.  Long story kept short, the "new" neck and shoulder pain "nocked" her out of the hunting season.

As for me... nothing with the bow this year; however, I was able to take two deer and my first turkey (ever!) with black powder.

Oh, by the way... the same day I took the turkey, I took a deer.   So yes, I came home, gave the turkey to Jen (who gutted and processed the critter)... so I could go back out & kill a deer.  That evening, we both bonded by processing OUR deer.  (GOSH, I love that girl!!!!)

Of course, Jen is a excellent cook, and wasn't discouraged with the bloody deer shoulders.  So, with a bit of salt water, a few days of changing out the soiled water with clean water... tada... braised deer shanks, and turkey barbeque!  So, yes... life is good!

Only one small doe with the bow for me this season.  Two doe and a nice 10 pt. with muzzleloader.  The freezer is full.

I finally got my new Foley longbow on Christmas eve.  Between the rainy weather and a week in Florida, I haven't really had a chance to get comfortable with it, but I'm sure it will be my go-to bow, for a while   ;)

I won't be at Dixie in January, but I hope to see some of the VA gang there in February.

I think with deer season over I might try a little tree rat hunting. This weekend was nasty and suffering through a chest cold I didn't want to get out in the stuff, unfortunately today is beautiful....but Sunday. I might be able to get out some this week and do a little tree rat huntin'. Gonna bring my camcorder with me and try to get some decent footage as well.

The only thing I'm looking forward to is Dixie shoots (I'll try to attend as many as I can; I do know I will be able to make it next weekend for the January shoot), working on my selfbow a little bit and doing a little tree rat huntin'. Hopefully I'll see some of you guys there at Dixie saturday!

As far as I am concerned... all tree rats die.  Reason: They gnawed a hole into my John Deere lawn tractor gas tank.

Plus... they are tasty!!!

Haha I'm with you David! I had one a few years ago chew through a transmission wire in my truck, a $300 fix. I had several chances through the season to shoot at several squirrels from the stand but I didn't want to cause too much commotion and scare off game. But now it's time to sharpen up my shooting, get revenge and put some meat in the freezer. Fried squirrel...it's what's on the menu   :readit:

First blank since '94, the mast situation was really poor on this side of the Ridge. Know down near Roanoke and Richmond was the same situation. Gotta be better in '14.

Well since we are recounting our season, I just took the one shot with my bow the first week of the season. My son (9 yrs old)has the deer hunting bug BAD. He killed a nice 8 point the first week of gun season! This was his 2nd afternoon EVER deer hunting, and his 2nd deer! Wish I could post a pic of him here! That was the highlight of my year, maybe for 10 years!

I did kill a nice 8 pt with my muzzleloader. I went home to WV on Thanksgiving Day, took a quiet walk in the snow around my old hunting grounds, and managed to kill a deer for my dad.  I ended the season with one more gun kill just to fill the freezer.

Congrats to everyone. It was a tough season for many....just not for Evan!     :jumper:

Danny-my year was blank with the bow other than a red fox but by other means 3 deer and 2 turkeys filled up the reserves. Can't complain too much.
