Title: 2012 Virginia Harvest Thread
Post by: Nook on October 10, 2012, 10:25:00 AM
I figured we should start a new thread.  Now I've had a few close encounters, but luck has been on the critters side.

Got a call from Travis Lillard last night.  He broke the ice with a fine mountain 8 pointer.  I'll try to get him to post a few pictures.

Man - I've never seen or heard so much early rutting behavior.

I got this guy Thurs. evening. I used a Great Northern Lil Creep and a 634gr. larch arrow with a 145gr. Eclipse. It was about a 13 yd. shot and I saw him fall. He dressed 135 lbs.

Got out for a bit tonight, after a soccer doubleheader and a field hockey game.  100 yards or so behind the house; still too thick to see much....but this guy is skulking around, among others.  Back at it for a late morning hunt Monday.

Jack, how do you like your Lil Creep?  I've got one coming in a few weeks.

Daryl I really like it. I bought it last year mainly for hunting out of a pop up blind. But this year when I hunt from tree stands I have been using ladder stands. I have found out they limit your shooting direction more than hang on's, but they sure are easy to get in and out of and are comfy. The Lil Creep helps alot. I may have to get another.

     Meat for the fridge!

Jen and I went out this evening. She had 4 does walk out at about 40 yards. They casually wandered around the pond, and Jen was hoping they would come closer for her shot, but....
On the way back home she stated to me that her heart was beating a lot faster than normal and breathing got a bit harder.  (She wants her first deer - with a recurve - so, so bad.)

As for me, I saw parts of one critter, but no clear shot ... yet.

Congrats Allen!

I'm finally getting to chime in after 3 days of catching up at work.

I do not have any "hero" pictures, simply because I didn't have any chances on this trip.  HOWEVER, I had a blast, as usual.  3 days and 4 nights in the hills of Madison County can really help you relax.

I did have a really nice 8 pointer inside 35 yards the first morning, but as you all know, that won't cut it in the traditional world.

Congrats to both Jeff and Danny.  They were nice enough to handle all the dragging and cutting while I was up on the mountain waiting for a bear that never showed.

Lord willing, we'll all be back in Madison again next year for the annual gathering.

So, hunted for a bit Saturday morning; had to bug out at 7:45 to get up the house to get Justin ready for his soccer game.  As I'm putting my stuff in the truck, I look across the field to see the fella I posted on pg 1 starting to cross the cornfield.  Watched him travel on a beeline down to the corner, literally 7-8 yards from where I had been sitting 10 minutes before., and then to further mock me, he stood there loitering for 10 more minutes before sauntering back across the field.  I think he has Justin's soccer schedule on his Blackberry.....and he's much prettier in broad daylight.
Congrats to the CSG and everyone else; enjoying this thread immensely.

Just about all the areas I hunt have the "earn a buck" system. Since I have already killed a buck I have to kill a doe before I can kill another buck. I have been getting worried since I have daytime pictures of a big 8 poiter and a 10 pointer. Last night I finally got a doe. Now I hope to see one of those big boys. I used a Great Northern Bush Bow Backed with cottonmouth skins (The Kalamazoo Cottonmouth). A fir arrow tipped with an Eclipse broadhead. She went about 60 yards.

I took a couple days off this week and hunted hard.  Tuesday I was on stand in a creek bottom.  At 9:25 the buck I've known for the last 4 years (and mmmmissed last year) was coming down the creek to me.  He ended up turning into the open hardwoods at about 50 yards.  There I was, bow in hand during muzzleloader season, the buck of anyone's dreams in the wide open, clueless that I was anywhere around.
Needless to say, he gets my knees shaking.  Most who have seen trailcam pictures agree he was a 160 class buck last year.  Let me tell ya, he hasn't started going downhill yet, even though he has to be at least 7.5 years old!!!!  I have his sheds from 4 years ago when he was an impressive 9 point, so he's got to be 7.5+ years.  He's my motivation for getting out there.

I will kill anoth doe late season if no buck.

Good luck guys

Me and the great northern put a little meat in the freezer.   :)   shot a spike at about 20 yards, ace broadhead, whole chicken arrow, cedar shaft.  my shot was a further back then i would have liked but he only went thirty yards.  i waited about 30 minutes in the stand and couldn't beleive how close he was!

that two for the Scaggs boys so far, and two for the whole chicken.   :)

There are some great pictures so far.  Nice bucks!  Especially yours Duane!

So here's the hunting report from Isle of Wight county (SE Virginia):

One doe (sorry, no picture) around the first week or two of bow season.  My 8 year old daughter really took an interest when I brought the doe back home so she said that she wanted to "blood trail" my next deer.

I let a couple of small bucks walk and then this buck came by on the last day of bow season.  My daughter did most of the blood trailing and she found the deer in about 40 yards.  Right next to the deer were a bunch of giant Sycamore leaves.  So she's holding up her trophy leaf in the photo!

Trying to post photo...

Whoa!  That last pic was a really big photo!  The next one is 320 pixels.

Great advice Duane.  ImageLinky was easy.

This past Saturday I had an interesting experience!  After only being up in the tree for a few minutes a turkey flew up into a tall pine and kept putting after sitting up there.  This is really unusual behavior because they usually go silent after flying up in a tree.  Then a squirrel sounded the alarm for a few minutes followed by a deer snorting non-stop.  That's when I realized that there was a predator somewhere.  The deer just wouldn't stop snorting.  Thinking it was going to be a coyote (I trapped 6 last year) I prepared for the shot.  I was surprised when it turned out closer than I thought (15' from the tree) and it wasn't a coyote it was a bobcat!  Just about the time when I was wondering if I wanted to shoot a bobcat my arrow struck him.  He only managed to go about 15 yards.

I've skinned him and hope to have a bobcat quiver by the spring!

Nice buck and good shooting on the kitty.  Looks like life is good in Isle of Wight.

Tell your daughter that this forester is impressed with her leaf.  That is a trophy leaf without question.  Very cool to see her out there with you.

Thanks Allan.  I'm shooting the strings that you made for me.

I attribute most of my good fortune to shooting LEFTY!

Love to see my strings in action!  :bigsmyl:

I'm sure the guy tugging on the string had a little to do with it as well!

this ain't archery related but i thought i'd share the quick tale since some of ya'll know my my old man, Pop Scaggs, creator of the full chicken arrow.  He came up for a late season rifle hunt this weekend,  hunted new years eve, saw three and some turkey but no shots.  went out new years day, late around 8:30.  we picked our spots and started heading off and i got about 1/2 way to my spot and heard three shots in a row.  then i get a text from the old man that says, "bring the truck".  i get over there and Pop Scaggs has shot two bucks, one eight pointer and one seven.  needless to say it was a great father/son hunt, some fancy shooting by the old man, and nice start to the year.

But you said you heard "three" shots.  Why was there only "two" bucks?  What happened???   ;)

Cherish the good times with Pop!  Congrats to you both.
