You guys are inspirational.  Congratulations and keep up the good work.  I've seen plenty of deer so far, and a few snowflakes, but still have all my arrows clean and in the quiver.  May have to tag along and take notes one day.....

It's almost 3 p.m. and I've been in this oak tree since 6.  Jen is in a stand about 35 yards away (pointing in a different direction).  Not one sighting for either of us.   Oh well, I guess that's part of paying your dues.

Shot a doe yesterday but hit it back (liver) so decided to back out and give it time. When I came back I picked up the trail only to find a bear had done the same and found her before me. Kind of a hair raiser as it was in thick laurel and the bear had eaten one ham and partial on the other. Backed out slowly and got out of Dodge. Punched a tag and nothing to show for it. We have had 6 bear sightings on the property so far since season opened. Looks like a bear is going to be on the agenda this fall.

Tom,
If you get the bear, it should weigh a bit more than before you shot the doe.  Sounds like you have a good bait set-up now   ;)

There's always a silver lining!

Congrats to all of you, some nice trophys & table fare.

Don't know why the bears are infested on the property this year but definitely will try thinning one this year if given the chance. Sitting over a bait site (read guts/rotting meat) doesn't do it for me Bill, although if he happens by my stand will let the air out of him for sure. Allen-you know the property I'm talking about and membership covers hunting rights.

Hey Tom.  Just put out a "Pick-a-nick Basket" on your wifes favorite red checked table cloth.  Doesn't have to have food in it.  I've heard Yogi can't resit.....  I'm giving all my secrets away.
Good luck Bud.  Dan and I were tracking one last year that I had let lay over night.  The last large pool of blood had a coyote turd in the middle of it.  There wasn't much left of the deer.  I feel your pain brother.

Jeff

Title: Re: 2011 Va deer pics
Post by: Tom on October 13, 2011, 11:23:00 PM
It was a question of leaving the deer to lay down or maybe pushing it and I let it go-obviously too long but would do the same thing again given the same circumstances. Now if that bear or any bear happens to stroll-game on. Thanks for the understanding but there will be more deer to come.

I was getting jealous of all you guys down south having all the luck and determined to make a go of it up here in the northern part of the state.  I had not been seeing as many deer as in years past, but knew it was just a matter of time.  I took this fat doe last Friday evening just at last shooting light.  The old long nose came walking in rather quickly and I didn't see her until she was within 20 yards.  Fortunately I was standing up and ready as she came to a stop in perfect position, slightly quartering away at 15 yards.  I picked a spot and let fly.  She ran 30 yards and I heard her go down.  This was my first deer with a longbow (I have taken others with a recurve) and I couldn't be happier with my Leon Stewart Slammer.  The Stinger 2 blade left a nice hole and went through the offside shoulder.

Allen - you are a killing machine!  You shoot all those does now and the bucks won't have anything to look for, unless your plan is to keep one staked out so all the big boys come looking for the only one left!

Patrick, I don't think the buck in my area have to worry about a shortage of does. If anything, it will make them stay on their feet and look harder!!

I'm buck hunting now....got the freezer full!

Hey guys I have been away for a couple of weeks, my dad has been real sick for the past 3 months and about the second week of Oct. my mom fell and fractured her shoulder. So me and my sister have been sitting with them. I have had very few chances to hunt. Well I lost Pops last tuesday morning to congestive heart failure, ( he is in a better place he really suffered with it near the end). We buried him Friday so Saturday morning I told him we were going hunting. About 12:00 a 250 lb. bear gave me a 15 yard shot and I got both lungs and the heart. I emailed a pic to Dave to post for me. It was really a cool experience, I have never even shot at a bear before. The coolest part of it was I took an arrow and wrote Dedicated to Pops with his birth and death dates on the wrap of it. At about 10 minutes to 12:00 I was standing in my stand and I said out loud (well Pops if we are going to kill something today you better send something up here cause I aint seen crap). It was'nt 10 minutes till the bear came by. It was really special and something I'll always remember.

Jesse got this ol girl (#2 for the season) on a wet hunting trip.  Killed her right at dark so low light, fog and rain kept us from getting pics yesterday evening. He shot her with a 160 grain Snuffer so there wasn't an issue with tracking. LOL

Well, I didn't take a pic, but there's one less little deer in the woods.  Bow hunted opening firearms day. Nov. 19th.  Heard lots of boom booms.  No one noticed my twang-thunk.  Took it with my Morrison-Tradteck combo.  It will eat good. Making some jerky tonight.  :archer:
