Double that order for Duck Poppers.  I look forward to those all year...and then missed it last year.  I have drill on 16-18 October, so that is out for me, but the first two weekends of October or even opening weekend back in September would be fine so far as I know.  I'll burn a personal business day for a Friday.  I'll try to have some more bows to show around too.

From last years talk the 2nd week of Oct was the date we planned to have the hunt this year.  Does anyone know if this conflicts with any type of gun hunt for the area?

Also, remember not to shoot any protected pigs if you happen to see one!

That's a big lake that can swallow a lot of people.  I don't follow tourneys and so have no idea how big a deal it is or where on the lake it'll be headquartered.

I just might have to burn a couple of personal days to hang out a little longer since I missed last year.  We'll see.

The bass tourney is being held out of Mountain Harbour Resort so it shouldn't affect us.

Just a reminder but we can double up a tent with a camper on a single spot.  Plus there are a few of us that get 50% off the camp fee.  The caveat is those of us that get the discount must register and pay then let others join us.

I will be in my truck camper again and will have the couch bed available if someone would like to use it.  If you are over 5'8" you are still welcome to stay but the length of the bed may be an issue.

If someone wants to put a tent up along side me we can pay around $4 a night using the discount and splitting the cost.

Anyone else get the discount and don't mind sharing a site?

I am saving money now so I can stay an extended time.  I plan to hunt with the bow until muzzle loader opens then use my Hawkins.

Dave do you have room in the freezer or do we need to make other arrangements?

I'll contact Tyler and let him know and I'll also contact Caleb and see what he has going on.

I have a hammock that I can string up, or a tent.....or just crash on the ground (most likely).  Is that discount retired vets only or still in service too?  If still in, then I'd qualify.  Not retired yet, obviously.  A little over halfway there.

Post by: Friends call me Pac on August 06, 2014, 10:34:00 PM
My discount is for a military duty related disability.  Just being a vet doesn't get the discount.  Got to apply at COE to get it.

The other discount is for over the age of 65 I believe.

A few questions for a first timer.

So i assume we are staying at crystal springs camp ground. I noticed that the camp ground is a first come first serve for the camp sites. Is this normal?

Is this a guys only camp? My wife would like to come, she does not hunt but loves to fish and will spend most of the time on the bank of the lake.
Title: Re: So... (ARROW 2014) *edited*
Post by: sweeney3 on August 14, 2014, 06:13:00 PM
It would certainly be fine with me.

The first come first serve thing hasn't been a problem in the past.  The times I've gone there haven't been that many other folks in the campground total.

I know she would be welcome.  There is more to ARROW than just hunting.  We generally have a nice fire each night and visit. We are even known to have a group supper from time to time like duck poppers, crappie filets and maybe something new this year if you guys are brave enough.

I do plan to stay for a week of muzzle loader season.  I will stay until I get a deer with my Hawkins or 19 Oct, whichever comes first.

If you are more comfortable hunting from the ground it is easily done at the lake. Arky 714 hunts solely on the ground and I believe Sweenie does too.

The last two years I have hunted with a bow that I made, the Pac a Whallop. This year I will be hunting with a Bear Kodiak Magnum.  Let me share something about this bow with you.

I guess it was somewhere in the mid 90's and I was stationed at Altus AFB in OK.  I was kicking the idea around about shooting a trad bow.
Didn't know anything about them except I thought they looked kind of cool.

My next door neighbor Jessie was a great neighbor for me.  We spent a lot of time hunting and fishing together.  He was a couple years younger but not enough that you would notice or make a difference.

We hunted and fished together about 5 years but one day he decided to move back home in MO.

To help him get ready I was happy to lend a hand with packing up his household.  It was a job but the two of us were young and strong back then.  Regular bulletproof young guys.

When we finished loading the last item on the truck Jesse said he had forgotten to load something up and it was still inside.  He went in and came out with this Kodiak Magnum that had belonged to his late Father. He handed it to me and said thanks for being my friend.

Just a few years ago there was a bad tornado in MO.  You may remember it.  Sixteen people died in that storm and my good buddy Jesse was one of them.

The truck he was in was flipped over and tossed a great distance before smacking back down.  His wife and two boys were dazed but unscratched. Jesse wasn't as lucky.  Jesse was hanging from his seat belt dead.

So this year I got the old Kodiak Magnum down from the rack and made a new string for it.  I've been shooting most afternoons and it feels good. I decided it needs to go hunting so it's coming with me to ARROW 2014.

I hope Jesse is watching and enjoys the hunt with me once again.

You will have to be verry carefull on the lake there will be poberrly 60 boats leave out crystal springs ramp the bass tournament is a big bass only event not total weight in ,so you can launch any where on the lake you want, and weight  in at mountain harbour ramp, there will be hourly weigh ins could be as many as 400 boats, just have to travel with lights on in darkness...I will hunt up hy 70 n. of crystal there is a swath 20 miles wide by 30 miles long that you can hunt north and south of crystal springs (national forest)and plenty of corps land  around lake 1200 miles of shoreline i could never walk it all ...on the north side one of my buddies killed a 350 lb hog plus watch out for bears...there is plenty of deer down by the dam...I used to walk that to keep my weight down...very much a aplendor in our back yard ..see you all at crystal springs for A.R.R.O.W. 2014

Just got a few broad heads put together.  Wild turkey and crow fletching.  Looks pretty cool.  I am ready.  More than a little ticked that the army moved drill to opening weekend, but at least ARROW is still on.

With any luck, I'll have a couple extra bows shooting to bring down by then.  They may not be finished but hopefully have some shots through them.

Sarge we had a lot of rain and for the majority of the usual gang it was a washout.  But for those of us that have plenty of time on our hands we stuck it out and saw lots of deer.  At least the other guys saw lots of them.

I like to have everyone take photos as the hunt goes on and at the end of the hunt I make a slide show from the pics.  With the foul weather we didn't have many photos to choose from.  Still one of us managed a nice 6 point and others had shots.

Last year Bowlong and I hunted out there for 15 days if I remember correctly.  This year we added wtpops and he spent a week running around out there.  Bo and I stayed a few days longer than that.

We had Sweeney & stinger slinger come out for the weekend but they had to head back to work so they only got to hunt that weekend.

It will be the same place next year.  2nd weekend of Oct.  I imagine a few of us retired guys will more than likely show a few days early again and stay until muzzleloader opens.

FcmP,
Many thanks for the report. Being able to get out there is the main thing, everything else is gravy. I'm planning on this year, hopefully can make it work. Whats the bear population around there? That is my main goal.

Thanks,
Sarge

There are bear in the area.   That part of the state has a fair population of them and there is an open season then. I haven't seen any but I have seen scat & tracks once out there.

I had an amazing hunt. Met some great guys. Learned a lot, though ive been hunting most of my adult life its been in California and for the past 30 years has been hogs no deer. This is my first whitetail season ever. I was pretty much all eyes and ears. Pac came in on Wednesday when i arrived and put me in his boat to show me around. Little did i know he would let me follow him around like a lost puppy and hunt with him on his honey holes. Cant say how much i appreciated that. Learned so much on those hunts.

BoLong took me out to one of his spots showed me the area and the tree he sits in and said use it because it has a lot over cover as the deer come from point A and B most of the time. Well i choose to climb a tree close to it as his was a little big and i was not sure my stand would fit (it most likely would have) needless to say when the deer came in, 3 does and a nice 8 point, i got busted. Lesson learned, when a guy who has been hunting this part of the country for all his life, listen to him    :banghead:

I hunted a couple of days on my own walking out of camp. Saw deer there to. I must have been on deer 80% of the sits i did with opportunities on most.

Again this trip and the guys (along with the deer  :) ) taught me more in a week than i would have learned in three seasons on my own. Cant wait until next year.

I did get a couple of pics from Bolong's ARROW 14 hunt.

Nice when you can drag them such a short distance to the boat opposed to over the hill and through the woods but of course that is my opinion.

We use the boats to get to different coves and shorelines but there are some islands big enough to hunt with deer on them.

We do a bit of both but several of our group never step foot in a boat.  They walk across the road behind the camping area and see just as many deer if not more than I do by boating.  You only have to go maybe 150 yards behind my normal camping spot to start hunting.  Then you have thousands of acres to hunt.
