Title: The Memory Room
Post by: Dsturgisjr on April 12, 2007, 01:12:00 AM
Took some pics of my living room and thought some of you would enjoy them. I shot everything in the room with a longbow.

Wow mate. A fine place if I ever seen one. A room that one could find himself day dreaming all day long in.

 Just think how many critters would be in that room if you were taught to take your hunting boots off years ago!!...  ;)

Money? Tsk, tsk. I looked at that and thought of all the hours spent in the field, days of watching the doings of the Earth and her creatures. Truly priceless. There are some wonderful examples of the taxidermists' art as well, vibrant and lively representations of the animals' lives and moods. I wish my house had the kind of space yours does, as it presents the memories in a way that lets one see them all without being overwhelmed by the numbers, in an atmosphere of an airy cabin. What a comfortable place to sit and savor and reflect on hunts past. I would not need the TV in there.

Now, is that a  horse's  skull on the wall? Oh, and Killdeers are protected!!  :p

Great trophy room and awesome trophys to boot.

Denny, just curious,what have you got behind that pine? Did you use 3/4 or 1" plywood behind it all so you did not have to lookin for studs all the time. I've got a room to finish soon and was just wondering. For the big one's like buffalo, eland moose etc I like to use a 3/8 lag or bigger in some cases. My taxidermist is big in favour of 1" behind whatever.

Ian,
That is a piebald whitetail, I believe.  It's just a color variation that occurs.

Denny,
Definitely a beutiful trophy room with plenty of great memories to relive.  I know that I can sit in my house, look around at the critters, and daydream about past adventures.  Beats the heck out of TV.  Brady

Most excellent Denny.  Wish I had that ability. I sure do enjoy just sitting and watching and dreaming in places like that.  A couple favorites of mine...in a bar in Baudette MN, there is a very large moose, mounted very well and hung low enough so that you can gaze at it and just let your mind wander as to what happened and where that moose has been.  Another...a grizzly mount formerly in a US Attorney's office.  It was mounted in a natural setting, on all fours, and with no sneer or teeth showing. If you walked up and looked it straight in the eyes,from just a few feet away, you cannot HELP but feel the hair on your neck just go straight up.
Thanks Denny

Thanks, Rich. Got him 5 years ago in Mason county Texas. Free range no high fence. When we got the lease there were not many quality bucks. We started manageing and got him 4 years later. I got off of the lease last year and deer were still getting better. Two 11 points and several nice eights. The best part is it is only 350 acres, and all neighbors are low fence also.

Start a new one this year with exotics on it.

Denny, I would bet that your taxidermist has sent at least two of his (or her) kids through college on your tab.  An impressive display, and it makes my little trophy "shed" seem like a bone yard.

 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/aerohawk1/P4110464.jpg)

That's Pearl chewing on something she picked out of the collection.  There are at least six six point bulls in there, but I couldn't pull a couple out for the picture.  And they all weren't taken with a longbow.  Some were with a recurve way back when.  My kids will probably make chandeliers or something with them.  I keep all my Africa stuff in a storage room under a table, but am seriously considering getting an Oz buff mounted.

Post by: Dsturgisjr on April 13, 2007, 12:08:00 AM
Jason, Actualy my taxidermist is Bob Nancarrow, Monty Browning's hunting buddy. He does a great job at a reasonable price and get it done promptly. He drives a basic pickup like me. I think he spends too much on hunting trips.  :)

JDS3, Yes the peak of the cathedral ceiling is just under 16'. If I could do it over I wouldn't go with a cathedral again. Too much hassle hanging mounts and cleaning. I would go with a 12' flat ceiling so I could roll around at one level on scaffolding.

JDS#,

Denny's giving you good advice on the non cathederal route. My taxidemist designs trophy rooms and says 10 1/2ft - 12ft is best for many reasons. It is easier in long run for all mounting and cleaning tasks. He strongly suggests you use 3/4" plywood behind whatever you have on face of wall. If you do 10 -12 ft you can put plywood on top 4' all way around to save. It's easier in long run to do it all over wall and you'll never have to worry about where to hang stuff.

Denny,

Now that you have all that taxidermy in one place. Have you given any thought to treating mounts to prevent and bug problems. It only takes one bad beetle or even a moth to get in from outside and you have big problems. McKenzie the target guys also have big taxidermy division. They sell a product called PROTECK you buy it and use rag and atomizer to spray on mounts and work into hair on critters with long hair.It's around $30.00 a bottle and is cheap insurance for all the work you have there. It would probably take 3-4 bottles to do all you have there and every other year will do the trick. I have seen some real disasters with whole collections, as most of the time by the time anyone notices the damage is done. There is a company in the US that does travel around and provides a similar solution, but it's cheaper to do it yourself.

Biggie, "Notice the trash can right beside the treadmill".

When one is on a treadmill you need a place for the bones from the spent buffalo wings. It's placement makes perfect sense to me. Now all you need is a place for an ash tray...   :saywhat:

It's a great room. There's a lot of memories hanging on your walls.

Denny; thank you for inviting us all to your special place;

I don't mean to upset anyone here on the gang but I must say this;

Denny is NOT lucky but is a prime example of hard core dedication; yes the hunts do take money and some of the hunts, ALOT of money, but careful planning, alot of hard work, and putting the priorities in place can produce alot of things;
I will strongly agree that Denny is blessed but Denny is no different than you or I; he is trully an example of what a person can accomplish if he/she becomes determined and sets goals and doesn't permit anything to get in the way; if anyone wants memories like this, then all it take is true dedication;
Denny, once again thank you and a tip of the camo hat to ya!  :campfire:    :archer:

benderofwood,
Especially well said. The proof of these fellas dedication resides on their walls and all I can do is applaud their accomplishments. When I see rooms like these I don't think of the money it cost, but the memories that must surround the hunter.

My hats of to all of of you--us, I suppose--that devote your lives to your passion. I can't think of a better arrangement.

Great stuff. And thanks to those who posted their photo. It pointed out the fact I need vaulted ceilings...well one day. Maybe....

Post by: Biggie Hoffman on July 28, 2007, 08:52:00 AM
I agree with Denny on the vaulted ceilings. Mine are 26' and the top 10' or so are gonna be useless. If you put anything up there, you can't see it well enough to appreciate it. Not only does it make it a female dog to hang stuff, but cleaning is a major operation as well..

Denny....all ya gotta do is show up brother

Denny,
AWESOME room!  Truly shows your dedication to your craftsmanship and your passion.  Just a couple burning questions since you said that you shot everything in the room with a longbow.

1)  Where's the best shot placement for a plasma flatscreen and recliner?

2)  What did the other customers do at the store when you shot the aforementioned furniture?     :smileystooges:

Seriously, great displays and thank you for sharing your passion with all of us.

The Dr. told me to go easy on the treadmill, not to try and do too much right off so the 1st day, I turned it on and watched it run for 30 minutes.

Pat...You know how bowhunters are...the challenge is greater to hit a smaller basket   :)
My wife agrees with you though

Joe...Trust me, there is NOTHING on tv to inspire me to do anything :-)

You truly are blessed to have had the chance to hunt all of those animals, and cherish the memories in such a beautiful room.

here's part of mine.

I can't find all the ones I have of it..maybe they are at home. I agree with the mistake of choosing vaulted ceilings..difficult to hang stuff, a lot of wasted space, and cleaning is tough!

I'm trying to find a picture of my caribou that is mounted, and hung on the vaulted ceiling, up high. He measured 367 P&Y..but he looks like a dink cause he is up so high you have no reference and cannot see it well that high up.

If I can find it you will see what I mean.
