Title: I just found.......a Paul Schafer Memory
Post by: Guru on February 03, 2007, 03:13:00 PM
Found this today while going thru a box with some nick-nacks....

My original brochure that I got from Paul back in '86 when I ordered my Silvertip....what I wrote down, isn't what I ended up with though....

Some familiar "young" faces there, and some faces I don't see much of anymore...couldn't help but smile while I looked it over......

Though you guys might want to see it, never seems to be enough memories of Paul......

Great post Guru, I have a few of those too. I would not take anything for them. I wrote Paul while I was in high school and asked him for a price list. I explained that I was saving for a bow but could not buy one until I got job. He send me a brochure and a one Piece recurve with a few flaws on the finish. He wrote this should hold you over until the job comes. That bow is priceless now. I ended up buying several over the years. he took great interest in young folks, he would call every once and a while just to see how the season went. That ment the world to a young man that read about him so much.

Curt i think if It was me I'd have that laminated to protect it. Too cool to let age take it's toll.

I remember that brochure, I had one that burn't up in a fire in 96. I lost my silvertip in that fire. I believed it was the last one he finished. I received the bow on Friday and he died the following monday. I had called him to thank him for the bow and could not get him on the phone. I did not find out until a day or two later. I was offered alot for that bow years ago but I shot one buck with it and retired it.

Good memories.

Handle Section; Dymondwood color walnut.

I have heard a couple bowyers say "I was the first to start using dymondwood and now everyone does" Looks like Paul was first! I didnt even here about Dymondwood until 99! I wonder why it took so long to catch on? Very neat brochure!

That's cool Curt! Is there anyway it could be scanned and put on the Schafer page here?

I wish I hadn't wrote on it    :knothead:

Yeah, I guess dymondwood's been around longer than most realized.....I liked the greybark of a BW,so that's the color I wanted...but it wasn't an option back then.......

I was a 20 year old way too young newlywed. I called Paul and asked him about his bows.
He called me back on "his" dime as he called it and talked to me for an hour.
He liked the fact that I was from Canada.
I told him that someday after the baby that was due was born, I would get a bow from him.
I couldn't afford one right now.
He told me to figure out how much I could afford and he would make me one anyways.
I never did get back to him, that was 20 years ago...
Real nice fellow though. He was part of the reason that I got the trad bug.
I used to have that same exact flyer, wish i still had one.
